Introduction

Last year’s season recap was a roller coaster. This year’s recap is a really bad roller coaster that never really goes up, just kind of continues trending down in a sad, depressing way. 3 of our whopping 4 wins came in the division, with the obligatory home win over Indianapolis and two wins over Tennessee, who somehow managed to suck even worse than us. Overall, it’s another Jags year in which the offseason is probably more fun to read AND write about, so let’s get to it.

2024 Offseason (Free Agency, Draft)

Draft

  • Brian Fucking Thomas Jr., WR, 1.23
  • Maason Smith, DT, 2.48
  • Jarrian Jones, CB, 3.96
  • Javon Foster, OT, 4.114
  • Jordan Jefferson, DT, 4.116
  • De’Antre Prince, CB, 5.153
  • Keilan Robinson, RB, 5.167
  • Cam Little, K, 6.212
  • Myles Cole, DE, 7.236

Let’s start with the highlights, because those are fun.

The highlight’s name is Brian Thomas Jr.

Despite a chunk of his season being spent getting the ball tossed to him by MacCorkle Jones, BTJ set rookie franchise receiving records for catches, receiving yards, and touchdowns. He became not just the first Jaguars WR to make the Pro Bowl as a rookie but also a 1-million watt beacon of hope for the future of the franchise.

But BTJ isn’t the only bright spot of the 2024 draft. Rookie kicker Cam Little went 27 for 29 on FGs and a perfect 27-7 on extra points. 3rd round pick Jarrian Jones showed promise, too, and won Jags fans’ hearts when he jumped into (getting ejected as a result) the ensuing brawl after a dirty hit knocked out Trevor Lawrence, saying, “I would do it again.”

DT Maason Smith also showed promise when incorporated into the game, with 3 sacks on the season. No other Jaguars draft pick saw notable playing time.

On to free agency…

FA Gains

  • Arik Armstead, DT
  • Gabe Davis, WR
  • Mitch Morse, C
  • Ronald Darby, CB
  • Devin Duvernay, WR
  • Darnell Savage, S

FA Losses

  • Calvin Ridley, WR
  • Rayshawn Jenkins, S
  • Darious Williams, CB

No free agent addition exactly wowed in 2024 (but then again neither did most of the existing team). Morris was solid at center, but Gabe Davis was…exactly what Bills fans said he would be. Darby lost his starting job to Devin Duvernay, and Savage’s impact was minimal. Arik Armstead underperformed on the outside (and is expected to switch back to the interior in 2025) but at least impressed off the field, earning the 2024 Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

2024 Season Review

The team that Jaguars owner Shad Khan declared the most talented roster in team history did not exactly live up to that standard.

Week Result Score Notes
1 L JAX 17 @ MIA 20 This game may be most notable as the game that saw Tyreek Hill put facedown and handcuffed by Miami-Dade authorities on his way to the stadium. He went on to make a game-changing 80-yard TD reception in the game. It took all of about 3 quarters for concerns to be raised amongst Jags fans that maybe our issues weren’t solved by replacing our defensive coordinator. But BTJ shined fast, earning his first NFL regular season TD in the game.
2 L JAX 13 vs. CLE 18 I don’t know many Jags fans who weren’t already feeling resigned to a godawful season after this game. Pederson’s inspiring post-game words of “I’m at a loss” ended up summarizing how he appeared for most of his final season with Jacksonville.
3 L JAX 10 @ BUF 47 The Jaguars subreddit posted the post-game thread at halftime.
4 L JAX 20 @ HOU 24 The Jaguars went from “losing by a lot” to “losing by one possession…again”. There’s really not much else to say. It sucked. And it was pretty clear that we sucked.
5 W JAX 37 vs. IND 34 The sun sets in the West, taxes are due in April, and the Indianapolis Colts will lose in Jacksonville. Wearing the throwback “prowler” uniforms that induce sexual arousal in a large portion of the fanbase, the Jags beat the Joe Flacco-led Colts with a last-minute kick from Cam Little. The Colts haven’t won in Jacksonville since Barack Obama was halfway through his second term.
6 L JAX 16 vs. CHI 35 (London) And back to sucking. Caleb Williams put up four TD passes for Chicago. On the Jacksonville side, Gabe Davis gave us his random good game with 2 TD receptions. But it wasn’t enough, and user jaylkae66 summed up the general feelings of the Jags fanbase in the match’s post-game thread, saying "I truly hate football. It’s a massive net negative in my life. Jags football is so bad that it ruins all the other football."
7 W JAX 32 vs. NE 16 (London) Oh hey, we won. (Major caveat: Against the Patriots.)
8 L JAX 27 vs. GB 30 Another one-possession loss for the Jaguars in which backup Packers quarterback Malik Willis has to enter the game in the first quarter for an injured Jordan Love. Willis ended up leading the drive to set up a game-winning field goal by former Jaguar Brandon McManus as time expired. But Green Bay wasn’t the only team with injuries. Jacksonville lost their three starting WRs: Kirk, Davis, and Thomas, with Kirk’s injury ending his season (his second-straight season with such a midseason injury). They also struggled with injuries on the defensive side of the ball. They also struggled with not scoring more points than the opposing team, which is turns out is key to winning football games.
9 L JAX 23 @ PHI 28 The Jaguars faced the eventual Super Bowl winners with a surprising amount of "We don’t look terrible"ness in the second half, coming back from a 0-22 halftime score to get the game within 5 points with 4 minutes left in the game. But – once again – they couldn’t get another score.
10 L JAX 7 vs. MIN 12 In yet another one-possession loss, the Vikings held Jacksonville to just 143 yards, ran nearly twice as many plays, and had the ball nearly 2.5 times as long as the Jags. Starting for an injured Trevor Lawrence, who sprained his non-throwing shoulder against Philadelphia, Mac Jones struggled to get anything going. Meanwhile, Minnesota racked up 402 yards but still managed to only score 12 points, thanks in part to 3 interceptions by Sam Darnold. But an ugly win counts as a win, and another loss is another loss for Jacksonville.
11 L JAX 6 @ DET 52 This was the worst loss in Jaguars franchise history. For most of the 4th quarter, the Lions had most of their starters on the bench. There is nothing of note to mention about the Jags except maybe Cam Little, who made the two kicks he was asked to make. Yay.
12 BYE N/A N/A (Writing about this season was hard enough, please don’t make me say anything about the bye.)
13 L JAX 20 vs. HOU 23 Quarterback Trevor Lawrence returned from injury only to take a dirty hit by Texans LB Azeez Al-Shaair; a large brawl ensued. Al-Shaair was ejected along with Jags rookie Jarrian Jones, while Jags TE Evan Engram was penalized. Al-Shaair sort of apologized and was suspended for three games – missing games against the Dolphins, Chiefs, and Ravens. Following this game, the Jaguars were officially eliminated from playoff contention, and Lawrence had season-ending surgery on his left shoulder.
14 W JAX 10 @ TEN 6 I dunno y’all, what the hell do you say about a game in which two 3-10 teams – led by Mac Jones and Will Levis – battle to a 10-6 final score? Well, you say it feels good to beat the Titans. It felt good to beat the Titans.
15 L JAX 25 vs. NYJ 32 We brought the Prowler jerseys back to look cooler for this one-possession loss. But Brian Thomas Jr. looked great, catching two TDs from Mac Jones. The game was tied 25-25 with less than 2 minute remaining, but the 41-year-old Rodgers led a game-winning drive.
16 L JAX 14 @ LV 19 The Raiders entered this game as the worst team in the NFL. They exited the game with a win.
17 W JAX 20 vs. TEN 13 The Jaguars won, Mac Jones got do do a victory DUUUUVAL in front of a hometown crowd, and Brian Thomas Jr. set the rookie franchise records for receiving yards and receiving TDs. And for all the terrible, horrible, no-good things to say about the season, at least we beat the Titans twice.
18 L JAX 23 @ IND 26 (OT) The Jaguars lost, but another impressive BTJ performance nabbed him his eighth Rookie of the Week nomination of the season. Speaking of which, the season finally officially ended.
