I’ve been consuming a lot of television for decades - binged a lot of shows, watched a lot of shows as they air weekly. If you ask me what the greatest shows of all time are I’d come up with a fairly generic (but in my opinion, accurate, list) - The Sopranos, The Wire, The Simpsons (Golden Era not Zombie Era), Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul, Succession, Atlanta, The Leftovers - you get the gist.
I’m not sure I’ve ever enjoyed a show as much as I enjoy Severance. It’s so sure of itself and so good at whatever it’s doing - it’s almost like watching alchemy. Everything that they’re trying to do works to perfection. The concept is incredible, the writing is top notch (so many quotable lines from in every episode), the acting stellar, and it somehow combines elements of drama, comedy, horror/thriller, mystery box, into this seamless package that blows my mind. Every episode has such powerful, thought-provoking scenes, with so many layers of meaning, that are so - and forgive me for using a cliche term - earned.
I don’t want to give anything about the show away which is why I’m being a bit vague, but for those who are watching - can we already begin to talk about Severance as an all-time great? It’s been 1.5 seasons, which is short but I think it already belongs in the conversation. There are a lot of good shows on TV right now, and Severance blows all of them out of the water.
