The other day there was a post listing each team’s most recent 4,000 yard passer. I felt sorry for the Bears for being left out, so I created the following list: Each team’s most recent 4,000 yard punter.

More punting facts:

  1. The Dallas Cowboys, Pittsburgh Steelers, Minnesota Vikings, and Green Bay Packers have never had a punter kick for 4,000 yards in a season. Though the Dallas Cowboys have had two seasons (1984, 2002) where the team as a whole punted for more than 4,000 yards.
  2. Dave Zastudil is the lone member of the 5,000 yard punting club, having punted for a whopping 5,209 yards for the 2012 Arizona Cardinals. He doesn’t hold the record for most punts in a single season, however. That record (114 punts) is jointly held by Bob Parsons of the 1981 Chicago Bears and Chad Stanley of the 2002 Houston Texans.
  3. Leo Araguz for the 1998 Oakland Raiders holds the record for most punting yards in a single game with 709 - which is 144 more yards than the 2nd place record. Oakland won that game, BTW. Interestingly enough, despite punting for a record 5,209 yards in 2012 none of Dave Zastudil’s games from that season even crack the top 50 all-time single game punting yards.
  4. The first punter to break the 4,000 yard mark was Bob Scarpitto for the 1967 AFL Denver Broncos, who blew past the 4,000 yard mark with 4,713 punting yards. That record stood until 1992 when Rick Tuten of the Seattle Seahawks topped it with 4,760.
