“Mo” the collaboration of the Stand-up circuit’s Mo Amer and Ramy Youssef is a hilarious interpretation of both the Palestinian condition and the US immigration quagmire.
Mo is the son of the Najjars a Palestinian refugee family who fled Kuwait during the war with Iraq and for some reason have still been in US immigration limbo for the past 20 years.
As their status is continually shuffled by bizarre paperwork snafus, you learn just how hard Mo has to hustle to keep his family and his word to his long departed father who died shortly after surviving torture in Iraqi prison to get everyone to America.
With numerous Emmy award worthy performances of wit and charm, the 2 season series exemplifies the sheer difficulty of just even trying to catch a glimpse of the elusive American Dream.
The main standout performance is Amer’s Mo. And his never say die, never stop hustling, never surrender spirit.
Amer does a great job of depicting what we’ve all wondered about the enduring Palestinian character, why they can’t ever seem to leave well enough alone, and why in the face of seemingly impossible odds of succeeding, somehow Palestinians can still find a way to fuck things up and make bad decisions to make matters even worse for themselves.
I loved season 1 of this show. I just started season 2. Don’t tell me how it ends. It better end well…
