This post is mostly a rant but I need to vent. Okay so I’ve just finished watching the tv show called “The Hard Times of RJ Berger”. Here’s a brief summary from wikipedia:
The Hard Times of RJ Berger is an American television sitcom created by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith for MTV. The show’s central character is RJ Berger (Paul Iacono), an unpopular sophomore at the fictional Pinkerton High School in Ohio who is macrophallically-endowed. Berger’s two best friends are Miles Jenner (Jareb Dauplaise), whose ambitions for popularity cause him to clash with Berger, and goth girl Lily Miran (Kara Taitz), who has been lusting after Berger for several years. Berger’s love interest is Jenny Swanson (Amber Lancaster), a cheerleader who is involved with Max Owens (Jayson Blair), a popular jock and bully. The show is presented as a coming-of-age story and has been described by Katzenberg and Grahame-Smith as a blend of the television series The Wonder Years and the film Superbad.
Now this show isn’t a masterpiece or anything but I did find the main character’s life extremely relatable to my own teenage years and so watching this felt like a bittersweet nostalgic trip back to my highschool days. All was going well until I reached the end of season 2 and found out that the show ended on a very abrupt cliffhanger which was followed by the show being cancelled. I’ve rarely been as pissed about a cancelled show as this. It’s been 14 years so obviously nothing can be done at this point. But I honestly think that it is almost morally wrong to let people get so invested in something only to not even give it some kind of closure. I understand that this is a business and a show needs to be profitable to keep going. But at least, when that stops being case, it would be nice if the studios could at least allow for a cheap ending to be made when possible. Like maybe a shortened season, a direct to tv movie, an animated continuation or hell, if all else fails, just give us a book or summary of what would have been in the last season if possible (which is the case here since the author already had a third season in mind when ending this second one). Just anything but the current situation which frankly seriously discourages people from starting new series. /Endrant
