Welcome to the 2024 Big 12 Uniform Season Review! Since the season is over, it’s time for a recap! In 2024, the Big 12 welcomed 4 new teams, traded blows, flipped predictions and showed out in the CFP. Thanks, ASU! Plus, six teams all finished 8–4 or better after being picked to finish in the Big 12’s bottom half. What a wild year! In this edition, we’ll review each team’s different suits, my favorite and least favorite looks (labeled by Helmet/Jersey/Pants color), and my brief thoughts. Remember, “worst” is not an indicator of being a “bad combo!" Additionally, the combo counter is ONLY based on color combos, not facemask or logo choice. Later on, I’ll give out some accolades and recap some uniform highlights in THE Big 12 2024 Uniform Awards, which is always a good time. But for now, let’s go through every team and reminisce.
I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!
#7 Arizona State University Sun Devils (11-3):

Number of Combos: 8 Best: Yellow/Maroon/Yellow Worst: Maroon/Maroon/Maroon
From out of nowhere. Picked to finish last in the Big 12, the Sun Devils - led by charmer and ASU alum Kenny Dillingham in his 2nd season - instead rose to the top. They finished their 1st season in the Big 12 with a 45-19 slaughter of ISU for the conference title, their first outright title since 1996, a 1st round bye, and a near upset of Texas in the CFP Peach Bowl - one of the most exciting games of the season. Aside from the lofty goal of winning it all, there’s precious little that could have gone better in ASU’s season. Losses to Cincinnati and TTU were odd, but their wins throughout more than made up for them. With their reputation heightened, coach extended, and several big players transferring in or returning for another go, ASU looks well prepared for 2025. Among the six teams that went 6-3 in the Big 12 this year, 5 are on ASU’s 2025 schedule. Will they be up to the challenge? Kudos on a great season, and way to represent the Big 12 on the big stage. What an inaugural year!
Arizona State has a color scheme that’s instantly recognizable, like a desert sunrise over the Superstition Mountains. The simplicity of their uniforms may be a hindrance, but it certainly helps the versatility of each uniform. My favorite of 2024 is the standard combo worn Week 13 vs BYU. The use of the white facemask is a wonderful detail. And, of course, you can’t forget the use of Sparky on the helmet! In fact, any use of Sparky immediately put the combo higher on my list, including my 2nd place pick, the gold alternate ASU wore in Week 2. The white “Sparky face” helmet matched the gold, while simultaneously bringing enough maroon into the fold to match the jersey/pants. The perforated numbers and golf outlines added just enough to pique your interest, and the addition of the wordmark up top makes a world of difference next to the base uniforms. The “worst” was probably the all-maroon seen in Week 6. It’s is a great color, but the pearlescent “candy” paint on the helmets feels off. With such a great color scheme, big blocks of color like this feel a little too basic for me. ASU’s versatile uniforms need mixing and matching! Still, the Sun Devils were easily one of my favorite Big 12 uniform teams.
#15 Iowa State University Cyclones (11-3):

Number of Combos: 5 Best: White/White/White Worst: Black/Black/Black
While there were a few “what if?” moments for the Cyclones, 2024 will still be a piece of ISU history. Their greatest hurdle - never having a 10 win season - was finally snapped in a big way. They sadly couldn’t lay claim to their 2nd ever conference title after Arizona State’s CCG victory, but a Pop-Tart Bowl win against a stout Miami is a great prize. HC Matt Campbell has been extended to continue a great run, the Cyclones had 2 1,000-yd WRs with NFL hopes, and RBs Hansen and Sama/QB Rocco Becht should all return for the 2025 season. Add in great incoming transfers and freshmen and some young stars getting more playing time, Iowa State will almost certainly compete near the top of the Big 12 again. Congratulations to ISU for a great season!
The Cyclones updated their uniforms before this season. While I think most weren’t wowed originally, my opinion really changed through 2024. They added a distinct four stripe shoulder pattern and opted for stripe free pants, both changes I like. They also added a wordmark in the standard ISU athletics font that looks good. Overall, I like all of the updates here. Not to mention they FINALLY started to use a different logo than the Block I. Script Cyclones helmets (their first appearance since 1994) were worn 6 times. The only knocks I have against them are their non-use of the newly introduced gold pants (I wanted to see a 1987-1988 throwback look) and their overuse of the black alts. Funny enough, ISU only wore neutral colored pants all season - white or black. I would call their away Script Cyclone look my favorite suit of the year (worn 2x this season). The logo is awesome, the stripes set it apart, and the subtle “windswept” font is a nice touch. My least favorite has to be the all black Block I suit (Week 8). Yes, objectively it looks good. Sure, I am slowly getting more lenient of “Black for Black’s sake” uniforms. But these just feel tired. There’s no identifying colors or fun details. Just a block of a uniform that just doesn’t feel as special now. I know many ISU fans feel the same. The blackout has become a tad worn-out. That aside, a GREAT year for ISU’s uniform choices.
#13 Brigham Young University Cougars (11-2):
BYU Season Gallery
Number of Combos: 9 Best: White/Royal/White Worst: Navy/White/White
100 years of BYU Football! The Cougars were in the driver’s seat for quite some time in 2024. They had incredible games versus K-State, OSU, the Holy War, of course, and a CU beatdown bowl game. But disappointing losses to conference wrecking-ball KU and Arizona State left the Cougar’s heartbroken and outside of the title game. Regardless, an 11 win season is nothing to sniff at, especially when you consider they had 5 wins last year. Electric offense, special teams fireworks, and some brick-wall defense made this a memorable year that should set up another year of greatness in 2025. Something special is being built in Provo!
All of BYU’s combos this year felt very traditional. In fact, I’d bet you could show any one of these to a non-football fan and convince them they were the preeminent BYU suit. But one takes the cake: The White/Royal/White combo, worn in Week 7 & Week 8. The suit dates back to 1969, was worn by BYU in their 1984 national title season, and was welcomed bac warmly in 2009. They’ve been worn frequently since. The beautiful color, the symmetry, the consistent striping, the iconic logo. I love variety in uniforms, but this one is special. My 2nd place pick is their 1994 Cotton Bowl throwback worn vs K-State. I especially love the drop shadow numbers and the alternate “Y” logo on the sleeves. Also worth mentioning is that great all-royal blue Holy War look (worn twice) and “Royal Oreo” suit. Their worst combo was probably the Navy/White/White look worn against SMU. It hadn’t been worn since a 2004 win against CSU. While I think I enjoy the navy more than most, the royal still clears, and navy can be incorporated into combos better than this top-heavy suit. A great uniform year for the Cougars!
#25 University of Colorado Buffaloes (9-4):
Colorado Season Gallery
Number of Combos: 10 Best: Black/Black/Black Worst: Gold/White/Black
The big bad Buffaloes from CU had a very interesting season in their return to the Big 12. At the end of 2022, the disappointing Buffs went 1-11. In 2023, they improved to 4-8 in Sanders’ first season. This year, CU drastically improved again, boasting a 7-2 record in the Big 12, a four-way tie for first place until the bitter end, and several accolades (the program’s 2nd Heisman winner in star Travis Hunter, one of his many awards, and Big 12 OPOY Sheduer Sanders, who also won several other QB awards). Though they didn’t beat a ranked foe this season, 2024 was one of the most transformational seasons the Buffs have had. CU will lose Hunter, Shedeur and others, but there’s lots of promise for the team from Boulder in 2025. Expect to hear several names from the CU in the upcoming NFL draft!
Colorado refreshed their uniforms over the summer and they were certainly surprising! The Flatiron design is fresh and was a facet many have wanted for the Buffaloes for a long time. The design looked wonky on some suits, but it was great on most. My favorite is Week 7’s blackout adorned with gold. It’s a gre…
