I watched The Day of the Jackal series this past weekend with my girlfriend, and we both agreed on one thing: there’s not a single character (except for Nuria) that we actively rooted for or sympathized with. It made us wonder—was this lack of connection intentional?
Take Charles, for example. He’s portrayed as this tortured antihero who seemingly does what he does without any real purpose. If he had ended things after the first assassination attempt, he could’ve lived a relatively comfortable life. But instead, he goes on to kill a number of innocent people and behaves like a sociopath for the rest of the series. And we’re supposed to sympathize with him because of his trauma from war? It just doesn’t add up.
Then there’s Bianca. Honestly, how am I supposed to express my frustration with her character? She’s an absolute hypocrite teetering on the edge of psychopathy. She lies to people she calls friends, family, and coworkers, prioritizes her job over her own family, and can’t stop acting like a narcissist whenever anyone challenges her behavior. Sure, she meets her end by the series’ conclusion, but if her death was meant to carry any emotional weight or significance, I completely missed it.
