Original Title: [OC] Josh Allen and Jordan Love finished the regular season averaging less than 1 sack taken per game. Only two other QBs have accomplished this in the last 15 years (minimum 12 starts): Peyton Manning (2009) and Ben Roethlisberger (2020)
Josh Allen and Jordan Love each only took 14 sacks this year. If that number seems ridiculously low to you, you’re right. Josh Allen played in 16 real games and Jordan Love played in 15, which means they both managed to finish the season with an average of less than one sack taken per game. The last time that happened was in 2020 when Ben Roethlisberger was sacked only 13 times in 15 games, and the last time before *that* was 2009 when Peyton Manning took 10 sacks in 16 games.
For present-day context, here are the least-sacked QBs of the 2024 regular season (Minimum 12 starts)
QB | Sacks Taken | Games Started |
---|---|---|
Josh Allen | 14 | 16* |
Jordan Love | 14 | 15 |
Lamar Jackson | 23 | 17 |
Bo Nix | 24 | 17 |
Matthew Stafford | 28 | 16 |
Obviously there are a bunch of different factors at play when it comes to QB sacks, I just thought it would be interesting to see how this compares to other players in recent history. Here are the best QBs at avoiding sacks through of the last 15 years:
Year | QB | Sacks Taken | Games Started |
---|---|---|---|
2009 | Peyton Manning | 10 | 16 |
2020 | Drew Brees | 13 | 12 |
2020 | Ben Roethlisberger | 13 | 15 |
2024 | Josh Allen | 14 | 16* |
2024 | Jordan Love | 14 | 15 |
2016 | Tom Brady | 15 | 12 |
2016 | Derek Carr | 16 | 15 |
2018 | Drew Brees | 17 | 15 |
2019 | Patrick Mahomes | 17 | 14 |
2016 | Ben Roethlisberger | 17 | 14 |
2018 | Andrew Luck | 18 | 16 |
2017 | Philip Rivers | 18 | 16 |
*I am not counting Josh Allen’s one handoff last week as a full game started. With or without it, he still averaged less than one sack taken per game so I’m leaving it off.
Just thought this was an interesting statistical anomaly given how the last few years have seen a resurgence in defense. This sort of thing was more common in the mid-late 2000s, completely disappeared from 2009-2020, then all of a sudden two different QBs pull it off in 2024.
