I feel like ever since the term was discovered by a broader social media audience it’s been aimlessly thrown around – even on this subreddit

The definition of male gaze is as follows:

“the perspective of a notionally typical heterosexual man considered as embodied in the audience or intended audience for films and other visual media, characterized by a tendency to objectify or sexualize women.”

It’s a term in mainly filmography. Think of the camera focusing on the ass or boobs each time a woman is on screen. Think of reducing female characters to their body and how it can serve the male characters.

It’s not about how you dress in real life to appease the men looking at you.

I understand that language evolves and changes and it might start taking on a new meaning if people misuse it too much. Hell, some people are probably not even aware what it originally meant – they’re probably thinking of it as two seperate words.
