That was without doubt the most shocking twist i saw, and i speak when 4x12 was aired the first time, like 2009.
Having the actual WIFE of the protagonist dying, the same character that we saw the pilot was absolutely heartbreaking
Rita’s death is one of the best fictional representations of collateral damage caused by someone else’s dangerous behavior. Doakes was 100% on the money when he told Dexter he would end up destroying Deb, Rita, and the kids even if he would never hurt them on purpose, and that was litteraly the start of the downfall of Dexter life, nothing was the same after, even when he was going a bit better in the beginning of season 6, trying to rebuild himself he was still haunted by the ghost of Rita, her death destroy his life.
The show lost its magic without her, she was such a soft and beautiful presence and she helped Dexter realize he was more human than he thought.
And i really hope we will see her on Ressurection !
