Wife and I binged Silo season 1 and 2. Season 1 was pretty fantastic with anything that would “break immersion for me” was pretty limited under suspension of disbelief.
Then we watched season 2 and there are some spoilers I want to discuss about.
At the end of S1, Holland smashed this hard drive to bits with a hammer. In season 2, Holland then tasks Lucas Kyle to basically put the pieces back together and… well he successful does it. Like Holland holds up a zip lock bag of smashed up pieces and you can see the platter scratched and dinged up.
I think this bothers me so much because I work in cyber security and have done some minor data recovery work early on in my career. The though of just using a miscellaneous box of “tools” to reassemble a smashed mechanical drive with a contaminated platter along with somehow reassembling the actuator arm is just mind bogglingly stupid. I also think most people realize how sensitive a mechanical, spinning hard drive is. It just makes me think, “my god have the writers for this show just not know what a hard drive is?” Like it’s akin to saying someone fixed up a car with a broken axel using just a box of wrenches. Am I being overly critical of this or is this a plot point that non-tech people would know about? Or did I miss some kind of plot point that said this was some special, alternate reality kind of hard drive that is smash proof?
The show is still fantastic and I’m looking forward to the season finale. More than likely will pick up the book and binge that too to see if the same plot point is there but it’s just so weird to me how a show about technology would miss on something so basic.
