Karel Zeman's Baron Prášil/The Fabulous Baron Munchausen (1962) is a fantastic movie. It is a surreal and highly stylized Czech adventure film about a cosmonaut who meets the legendary Baron Prášil (on the moon holding a dinner party) and follows his travels through a parallel land filled with beasts and a strangely warped reality. While filmed in black and white, scenes are painted different colors, contributing to a very dreamy feeling and amplifying the mood shifts as the man travels to the Moon, the Ottoman Empire, the belly of a fish, and to other places. In addition to the color, animation is also used to create very surreal and unique environments the characters travel through. The dialogue is generally curt but peppered with jokes, and overall Baron Prášil comes together to form a very unique and memorable film.
