This is a hard question to Google so I shall pose it to you all. What are some notable cases where a team has barely moved down in the rankings or even stayed in the same position after a loss? I know that in recent memory, TCU stayed at #3 following their Big 12 Championship loss. This one to me is a bit notable because, at least in my opinion, the much more logical decision would have been to put them at 4 and Ohio State at 3, but that likely didn’t happen due to the rematch between OSU-UM it would set up, along with the fact that OSU hadn’t played in the Big Ten Championship. However, I think scenarios like these near the end of the season are at least somewhat common, as the best teams by then have established themselves in a tier of their own, i.e. the #2 team not moving down after losing the National Championship.
With that in mind, are there any notable instances you can recall where a team didn’t move much after a loss, or even stayed in the same position? Maybe a regular season game between the #1 team and a team near the back half of the Top 25 that was much closer than anticipated, and the consensus was that it was indicative of the lower ranked team being underrated rather than the #1 team being overrated?
