After the success of Ted Lasso, I wonder if American viewers would be drawn to a serious drama around soccer/football. The sport’s popularity is increasing based on how television channels pay a lot to broadcast games from the Premier League, and how the clips ESPN puts on YouTube get many views. Also, the MLS seems to maintain decent attendance. Plus, the population that comes from immigration needs not be preached to.
The success of Ted Lasso, along with other sport-based shows, is an indication that a story deeply connected to a sport could still appeal to people who know nothing about that sport.
Even with regard to shows about sports that are popular, off-field storylines and dynamics seem to be what draws viewership and intensifies interest.
Stallone’s movie Victory was made in 1981, a time when soccer/ football was far less popular in the USA than now and still managed to be successful.
Do you think it’s time for a serious soccer/ football based saga?
