I really enjoyed season 1 of Julia, but season 2 just didn’t have the same charm.
Season comes in roughly two halves: getting The French Chef on the air, and Julia coping with her meteoric rise to fame. All the characters have a part to play and the stakes are interesting (even if we know that obviously everything works out in the end).
Season 2 bloats everything up so much. I don’t need THREE episodes where Julia is still in France with Semca. I don’t need a drawn out Avis romance plot. I don’t need a plot about Judith’s boss going blind (this one was by far the most egregious).
I wish they had focused on the story about CBS trying to court Julia. That would have kept all of the characters involved in one central conflict, instead of each splintering off into their own.
It seems like this show ironically forgot something that it says multiple times: Julia is why people are tuning in.
I’m sad the show got cancelled, because there was a lot of good stuff in it. Sarah Lancashire’s Julia is delightful, and the miniature Frasier reunion with David Hyde Pierce and Bebe Neuwerth was always a treat. But man, did it lose its focus
