Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM
Tim Tebow was born in Manilla, Phillipines to American parents serving as Baptist missionaries. Tim’s birth is a minor miracle - his mom contracted amoebic dysentery and fell into a coma, during the course of treatment the medicine used to treat her caused a severe placental abruption. The doctors expected a stillbirth but on August 14, 1987 Tim came out living and healthy.
The Tebows returned to the states and settled in Jacksonville, FL. Tebow was homeschooled but suited up first for Trinity Christian Academy as a tight end and later struggling Allen D Nease High School as a quarterback. He eventually lead them to a state title as a senior in addition to back to back Florida Player of the Year, Mr. Football and a Parade All American. He was recruited by, well, everybody - being a top 25 player in the recruiting rankings. He nearly committed to Mike Shula to play at Alabama but he chose Urban Meyer and the Florida Gators.
Meyer found a niche for Tebow immediately. He played in every game of his 2006 freshman season. Chris Leak was the teams starter but Tim made significant impacts as primarily a runner and in goal line situations. Florida won the BCS National Championship and team was second on the team with 469 rushes for 8 TDs.
2007 was a step back for Florida - finishing 9-4 but it was Tim’s greatest individual season. He set Florida records for single-game quarter back rushing yards, SEC season rushing TDs, SEC season total touchdown (passing and rushing). He was first-team All-SEC, a first-team All-American, he won the Davey O’Brien Award, the Maxwell, AP College Player of the Year, Sporting News Player of the year. His season totals of 66.9% passing, 3286 yards, 32 Tds, 895 yars rushing and 23 TDs were good enough to become the first sophomore to ever win the Heisman Trophy. He is the only player to ever rush and pass for at least 20 touchdowns in the same season.
2008 saw the Gators return to the top of FBS, winning the SEC and the BCS Title. As for Tebow he broke Emmitt Smith’s career rushing TD record on November 1st and put up another stellar season: 64.4% passing, 2747 yards, 30 TDs, 673 rushing yards and 12 TDs. He again won the Maxwell Award, becoming just the second player to win the award twice. He was named SEC Offensive Player of the Year, was a first-team All-American and first-team All-SEC. He came the closest to Archie Griffin’s feat of back to back Heismans – he had the most first place votes but came up short and finished 3rd in the final ballot.
Tebow returned for his senior season in 2009. In a victory over Tennessee on September 19th Tebow broke a string of 30 straight games with a passing touchdown, a streak that stretched back to his first BCS Title Game. A few weeks later on October 31st in the WLOCP Tim ran for his 50th and 51st rushing touchdowns breaking the SEC career rushing TD record previously held by Herschel Walker. A record that stands to this day. Florida lost the SEC title to Alabama and Tebow’s college career came to a close int he Sugar Bowl against Cincinnati. He put up a BCS record for 533 yards of offense and had four total TDs. This completed a streak of 41 straight games (all the way back to that BCS Title game against Ohio State) where Tebow either ran or passed for a TD. His final year totals were 2895 passing yards, 21 TDs, 910 rushing yards and 14 TDs. He was second-team All-SEC and second-team All-American but SEC Offensive Player of the Year. He was again a Heisman Finalist. He won the William V Campbell Trophy.
He finished his career holding five NCAA Records, 14 SEC records, and 28 University of Florida records. At the completion of his career he was the SEC All-time leader in: career passing efficiency, completion, TD to INT ratio, rushing yards by a QB, rushing TDs (regardless of position) and total touchdowns.
His career totales were 67.1% completions, 9286 yards, 88 passing TDs, 2947 rushing yards and 57 rushing TDs.
He was drafted 25th overall in the 2010 draft and played just 35 games in three seasons.
He was inducted into the Florida Ring of Honor in 2018 and is a member of the 2023 College Football Hall of Fame.
Tebow in his only bowl game loss, love him or hate him, Tim was a FOOTBALL player, with the Heisman
