Yesterday I saw the Moq clusterfuck (see and ) which started because the maintainer wanted to monetize the project somehow. That made me think about monetization of OSS projects. How do people do that?
Is it viable to have an OS license with clauses that state when you’re obligated to pay, for example “if a commercial product using this library has over 20 devs or makes over 50.000 USD, you need to pay for using my library X amount per month”? Are companies really going to pay?
Apart from reaching out for sponsorships, are there proven ways of financing a project at scale like Moq, that has thousands to millions downloads per week ()
