It’s no secret that Bowl Season is starting to become synonymous with senior players opting out, leaving their teams with fewer experienced personnel. But, from what I can gather, this trend seems to have decreased significantly this year. Many players in high-profile bowls have confirmed they will be playing.
Examples:
- Holiday Bowl - Syracuse star QB Kyle McCord will be playing as confirmed by HC Fran Brown. In addition, Wazzu star QB John Mateer has been practicing, although his bowl status has not yet been confirmed.
- Pop Tarts Bowl - Miami star QB Cam Ward has confirmed he will be playing.
- Alamo Bowl - Colorado HC Deion Sanders has confirmed that first round favorites QB Shedeur Sanders and CB/WR Travis Hunter will be playing.
- Citrus Bowl - Although no South Carolina players have specifically announced they will be playing, HC Shane Beamer confirms none have yet opted out, and that several seniors have told him personally that they will play.
Personally, this really excites me. I love Bowl Season, and I can only hope this trend continues. I consider the high-profile bowls (Citrus, Holiday, Sun, Alamo, Pop Tarts, etc) just as important as the first-round playoff games. Getting more meaningful football is something that should be applauded by all fans, even if your team isn’t playing in a bowl.
