What are some of the things modern television has evolved from the original ‘tune into a channel at a specific time’ to improve our experience and what things are you hoping start?
Netflix pioneered streaming in general, releasing the whole season all at once (binging) and a really strong ad-free experience. One small feature I do love about Netflix and notice the lack of on other streaming services is, they recognise when the actual show ends and not when the credits end, throwing you into the next episode without you having to fast forward the credits (Hello DISNEY+??).
Amazon introduced X-Ray so you can typically pause and find out what actors are present on the screen, very minor but useful thing here and there. But negative points for reintroducing ads.
A new feature Apple TV has introduced is pausing and rewinding the show pops the subtitles on briefly. Someone has obviously had the exact same problem I had sometimes when I’m trying to understand something and rewind it over and over. Throwing the subtitles up briefly for that period is an amazing experience.
I’m still missing the deleted scenes for shows and commentary tracks.
Overall it’s quite incredible the access and availability of most TV shows in general. It almost feels offensive when you can’t find a specific show you wanted to watch. 20 years ago you got what you got, or you bought the DVD’s.
