As part of my desire to understand CFB on a deeper level, my throwing darts have landed on BYU/Utah.

I get that these 2 schools are rivals, but I was always under the impression that secular people in Utah rooted for Utah while religious Mormons rooted for BYU. But apparently that’s not the case?

If you’re Mormon and the default/only major Mormon-specific affiliated university in the country(that I’m aware of) is BYU, wouldn’t you default to rooting for them over Utah?

Sorry for my ignorance, I don’t mean any disrespect at all. Genuinely trying to learn the dynamics of the rivalry and its fanbases.

Utah/BYU feels like one of the few rivalries where the hatred runs beyond football and spills into other areas. I’ve only noticed this in a select few rivalries(like Ohio State vs Michigan), as opposed to university of enter state hates enter state state university.
