Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM

Peyton Manning attended Isidore Newman School in New Orleans and lead the Greenies to a 34-5 record over his three years as starter. He was the Gatorade National Player of the Year and the Ohio Touchdown Club National Offensive player of the year. He and his younger brother Eli both wore the #18 to honor their brother Cooper who had to retire from football due to spinal stenosis. Everyone in the country wanted Manning as a recruit, including his daddy’s alma mater Ole Miss.

Peyton chose to blaze his own trail with Phil Fulmer and David Cutcliffe at Tennessee. He attended Tennessee from 1994-1997. He started his freshman year third on the depth chart behind Jerry Colquitt and potential MLB Hall of Famer Todd Helton. On the seventh play of the first game Jerry suffered a season ending injury and Tennessee was in full scramble mode. Two games later Todd Helton suffered an injury and Peyton was pressed into duty. He fell short of a comeback - falling to Mississippi St 24-21 but he threw his first two collegiate touchdowns, was named starter and never looked back. The Vols went 8-1 with a Gator Bowl victory the rest of the way with their only loss coming at the hands of #10 Alabama by 4 points.

1995 saw the Vols go 11-1 with a loss to rival Florida. Peyton finished sixth in the Heisman balloting and tallied 2954 passing yards, 22 TDs and just 4 INTs.

1996 saw the Vols open the season ranked #2 but they came up short against Florida again (and Memphis) and finished the season 10-2 and ranked 9th. Manning added a second Citrus Bowl title to his trophy case leading the Vols to a 48-28 win and being named game MVP. Peyton’s season line was 63.9% completions, 3287 yards, 20 TDs and 12 INTs. He finished 8th in the Heisman balloting and completed his Bachelor’s degree in speech communication. Despite being projected as a top pick he chose to stay at Tennessee for his senior year. He was named second-team All-SEC.

1997 saw Peyton and Vols start the season hot but again lost to rival Florida. They would win out and advance to the SEC Championship game where Peyton played brilliantly and led the Vols to a comeback victory by throwing for 373 yards and 4 TDs. He was the game MVP and the Vols were positioned well heading into the post season. The Vols faced off against #2 Nebraska in the Orange Bowl but could not stop the Huskers rushing attack and fell 42-17 and saw their opponent split a national championship with Michigan. Peyton’s senior year saw him rack up 3819 yards, 36 TDs and 11 INTs. He was showered with awards and honors after his senior year including: First-Team All-SEC, SEC Player of the Year, Consensus All-American, William V Campbell Trophy, Davey O’Brien Award, Unitas Golden Arm Award, the Maxwell Award, and a second place Heisman finish.

He finished his Tennessee career with 45 games played, 62.5% completions, 11,201 yards, 89 TDs and 33 INT with a career rating of 147.1.

He was drafted first overall in the 1998 Draft and went onto become one of the best quarterbacks in NFL History.

He played for 18 seasons including: 2x Super Bowl Champion, Super Bowl MVP, 5x MVP, 2x NFL Offensive Player of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, Walter Peyton Man of the Year Award, 7x First-Team All-Pro, 3x Second-Team All-Pro, 14x Pro Bowler, 3x passing yards leader, 4x passing TD leader, 3x passer rating leader, 2x completion percentage leader, a member of the 2000s All-Decade Team, the 100th Anniversary Team, the PFWA All-Rookie Team, the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts Rings of honor, his #18 is retired in Indianapolis.

Tennesse retired his #16 and he was inducted into the following Halls of Fame: Louisiana High School Sports, Indiana Sports, Louisiana Sports, Colorado Sports, Tennessee Sports and was the Tennessean of the Year in 2016.

He still holds the NFL record for single season passing TDs with 55, Single season passing yardage with 5477 and the most TD passes in a game with 7. He has the third most TD passes in NFL history.

He was a member of the 2017 College Football Hall of Fame Class and the 2021 Pro Football Hall of Fame Class.
