It’s common in movies and TV shows to have a character that is either new to the environment/situation or at least new to the rest of the group. It allows other characters to explain things to them (or even just exposition-dump to them), and through that, the audience also learns. I don’t know for sure if there is a name for this, but I thought I’d ask jic.
