You don’t have to have a degree in media analysis to know that late night ratings have been declining for over a decade due increased political polarization as well as the popularity of social media and streaming services. Yet it seems that the post COVID era has sped up what feels to me like the inevitable demise of late night comedy. Some examples:
-Seth Meyers losing his house band to budget cuts.
-The final season of Lily Singh’s ill fated NBC show being shifted from a traditional late night show to basically just a long form YouTube video aired on network TV
-The tonight show being cut back to four days a week for the first time in its history
-James Corden’s Late Late Show being scrapped all together and replaced with a comedy game show
Is there a future for late night comedy? If so, what would that look like?
