The rationale for switching sides of the field is that sometimes there are advantages on one end that would provide an overpowered advantage entirely determined by the coin toss. At the OU Texas game for example, the stadium is split down the middle, meaning that if all OT periods were in the Texas end zone, OU would be at a severe disadvantage. The same can be said with BYU, who has their student section on one endzone. Statistically (my Mormon friend told me) BYU has way more turnovers while the opposing team’s offense is on that side of the field.
