A heads up for everyone who has a secret cell phone. On Oct 4th at 2:18 Eastern the FCC is issuing a National level test of WEA (the same system as for amber alerts). This is important to know because National level alerts CAN’T BE TURNED OFF. The only way to make sure your phone is silent is to turn it off completely. This also applies to phones that don’t currently have service. If it’s on and in range of a cell tower it will alert at full volume and possibly vibrate. The test starts a 2:18PM Eastern and will send the alert for 30 mins to phones that power on after 2:18PM. The safest way to ensure your device doesn’t announce itself it to turn it off from 2-3PM.
There is no way to opt-out of this alert on a cell that is powered on.
If there is a weather event on October 4th there’s another scheduled for October 11th at the same 2:18PM
There will also be an EAS test on Radio and TV at 2:20PM on those same days.
