I know Rodgers is a lot of people’s least favorite person on this sub but the discussion around him seems to be a little skewed. There’s definitely some truth to the matter- the Jets have a terrible record and have obviously had lots of dysfunction. But the conversation around Rodgers on field play (off the field another story) seems a bit silly. I wanted to take a closer look at his numbers this year to see if he’s really been as awful as everyone around here thinks.

The Stats:

Rodgers statline for the year so far: 11 Games, 63% completion for 2442 yards, 17 TDs and 7 ints.

There’s obviously nothing eye popping about those and not the mvp Rodgers numbers of old, but they’re not egregiously offensive. He’s 7th in TDs, above Mahomes, stroud, Herbert, Purdy, Kyler, hurts.

His passer rating (88) and his Ay/A (6.49) are a couple ticks below league average (91,7.04). He’s also only lost 1 fumble, placing him above average on total turnovers. While these numbers are again not that special, he’s only 17th in average salary, below Daniel Jones, Stafford, cousins, Watson, Kyler and others.

The Advanced Stats:

While I briefly touched on Ay/A last section, I wanted to look at some other stats here, which are not as kind to Rodgers. His QBR is bad, at around 51, though still close to stroud (sneaky tough year for him too) and Goff. His adjusted EPA per play is 22d in the league, his PFF grade is 67.

His big time throw percentage and turnover worthy grade is actually quite good, at a bit over 4% and 2% respectively. One place he has not been good is his mobility, probably a bit hampered by a hamstring that has popped up on the injury report, probably just the fact he’s 40 coming off a torn Achilles. Hes tied for 9th in total sacks and 5th in yards lost.

Has Rodgers been the one losing the Jets games?

To me, the takeaway from all this is that Rodgers has been just average. He still protects the ball decently well despite some crazy ints inflating his numbers a bit (looking at you Wilson against PIT) but has not been anything special.

If you go back and look at a lot of their losses, Rodgers is rarely the main reason. In the first couple weeks alone, kicking cost the jets 2-3 games. Their vaunted defense has also taken a massive step back from last year, ranking 3d worst in TOs and second in missed tackles, though that raises the question of firing Saleh and the impacts there.

But there have been many factors contributing to the Jets rapid and frankly hilarious decline this year, which obviously Rodgers bears a lot of responsibility for, notably weird roster influence and the presence of Hackett. However, I feel his on field numbers and play have not been nearly as bad as people make it sound. At least, not bad enough where I would consider benching him for Tyrod Taylor for a second.

I understand how unpopular Rodgers is here but I did want to have an actual conversation ab his on field play, and if it’s actually the main catalyst for their horrible season, or if it’s just the circus of it all
