In the 2025 season, the FBS will expand from 134 teams to 136 as Delaware and Missouri State move up from FCS to join Conference USA.
I think the future of conference realignment is that the Big 10 and SEC will continue to expand, while the lower tier power conferences will poach the better group of five teams (we already saw this in part with the PAC-12, who poached the better Mountain West teams after losing their best teams to the Big10/12), and the lower tier G5 conferences will continue to recruit FCS teams to move up (which Conference USA and the Sun Belt have been doing plenty). So I think it’s highly likely that the FBS will expand beyond 136 teams in the near future.
So my question is which FCS teams do you expect to be playing at the FBS level by the time the 2030 season rolls around? The only one I’ve heard a specific rumor about is that the Mountain West is interested in Tarleton State but I don’t believe that’s progressed beyond the very early stages. What other FCS teams are likely to move up?
