Like the SEC, the ACC has a chance to make chaos with a 9-way tie of teams going 5-3 in conference. However, there are two paths it can take to get there, with an extra fork on one of them. First, what needs to happen either way:

  • BC beats SMU
  • Pitt beats Clemson
  • Louisville beats Stanford
  • Syracuse beats Cal
  • Virginia beats SMU
  • Wake Forest beats Miami
  • Pitt beats Louisville
  • Georgia Tech beats NC State
  • Cal beats SMU
  • Syracuse beats Miami
  • BC beats Pitt

In the first path, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Pitt, SMU, and Syracuse tie with Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia. Before I put what needs to happen I’ll save you the suspense. Pitt would advance to play Clemson. As with the SEC, this would advance to a tie breaker for best conference record of conference opponents. Pitt would win outright if Cal beats Stanford. If Stanford wins, Pitt and Louisville would tie and Pitt would have head to head.

  • North Carolina beats Wake Forest
  • Duke beats Virginia Tech
  • North Carolina beats BC
  • Duke beats Wake Forest
  • Virginia beats Virginia Tech

For the second path, Georgia Tech, Louisville, Miami, Pitt, SMU, and Syracuse tie with BC, Wake Forest, and the Virginia/Virginia Tech winner. There’s a little more to who advances, so let’s do the what needs to happen first.

  • Wake Forest beats North Carolina
  • BC beats North Carolina
  • Wake Forest beats Duke
  • If Virginia Tech beats Virginia, they must also beat Duke

If this happens, Louisville advances unless UNC beats NC State and Cal beats Stanford. That’s right, 2 games involving 4 teams not in the tie could decide who advances to face Clemson. If NC State and Cal both win, Louisville wins the tiebreaker outright. If NC State and Stanford win or North Carolina and Cal, Louisville wins outright if Virginia Tech is in the tie or ties Virginia and has head to head.

But what if UNC and Cal win? If Virginia Tech is in the tie, Louisville and Pitt win and Pitt would have head to head. If Virginia is in the tie, Virginia would win the tiebreaker outright and advance.
