Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2024 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 11! In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog all 16 Big 12 team’s uniform combinations week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s threads. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. I feel like we had a lot of fumble recovery TDs this past weekend, did you? And just when we thought the contenders were settling out, a wrench gets thrown in. We have a very exciting finale on the horizon! But for now, let’s take a peek at some threads!

I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!

University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs West Virginia Mountaineers (WVU Wins, 31-24)

UC: Black/Black/Black (Link: )

WVU: Blue/White/Yellow (Link: )

UC outgained West Virginia’s 248 total yds by almost double, gained 24 first downs to the Mountaineer’s nine and possessed the ball for almost 10 full minutes more than their WVU. The Bearcats had a rifle-shot 80-yd pass to Evan Pryor for a TD as well. But the turnovers VASTLY impacted this one. Safety Anthony Wilson had a great play, taking back a 79 yd pick six to tie the game 7-7 early in the 2nd quarter. The Mountaineers went on a 24 point run before the Bearcats pulled within 3 points. West Virginia sealed the win with another defensive score, though. LB Tyrin Bradley Jr. scooped up a backwards pass from Sorsby after a reinvigorated D-Line put the pressure on. He raced 14 yards for the scoop and score. WVU forced the fewest offensive takeaways in the Big 12 through the 2024 season before this game. And this was directly after firing their previous DC in favor of the newly appointed Jeff Koonz. They are looking MUCH better now. Both teams need one win to get bowl eligible. This was a weird one!

I appreciate how WVU decided to save this look for an old Big East opponent! This combo is much liked by Mountaineer fans, enough so that it’s the most worn away combo they’ve got in their EQ room. It’s their second most worn combo ever. I’m not usually a fan of tri-color outfits, so my evaluation can be taken with a grain of salt, but these are still pretty great. Especially in the updated 2024 suit. I know this is a fan favorite combo! The pant’s stripe really ties the whole thing together. The state outline logo has been worn on 5 helmets this season, while this more classic Flying WV brand has been worn on 4 helmets now. I expect it to be about half and half by the end of the season.

This was the 100th anniversary of Nippert Stadium’s completion. Completed in 1924, the stadium is the sixth oldest stadium in college football, behind only those of Harvard, Georgia Tech, Princeton, Yale, and Cornell. To honor the stadium’s anniversary, the Bearcats donned a very traditional monochromatic black look. It’s been worn 5 times in the three years I’ve tracked them, and I know it’s been worn several more times before that. Of course, it’s worth mentioning, this is the newer version of the suits, still looking great from their 2023 update. The red cuffs and collars are one of my favorite little details in a uniform ever. It works so well here, and adds just enough red to a team that loves to keep it white and black. The C-Paw is everywhere, and I love how it’s incorporated into the chest wordmark especially. Cincinnati is always a quiet player in the tracker, but most of their looks are truly great.

University of Kansas Jayhawks vs Iowa State University Cyclones (KU Wins, 45-36)

KU: Black/Black/Black (Link: )

ISU: Red/White/White (Link: )

A stunner in Kansas City! ISU looked to rebound from a devastating loss to Texas Tech on homecoming last week, but instead found a KU team ready to work. There’s plenty of cliche with what I’m about to say, but KU is far better than their record reflects. KU has choked away wins against conference leading teams like K-State and Arizona State, but they delivered against Iowa State, a real deal team with QB Rocco Becht going 24/37 for 383 yds and three touchdowns! The Jayhawks rushed for 237 yds total, gashing a usually stoic Cyclone defense. Senior RB Devin Neal stood tall with 116 yds and twoTDs. He has even more to be proud about, as Neal’s performance made him the leading rusher in Kansas football history.

ISU has worn this same look 4 times through the season thus far, and wore this one an additional 3 times in 2023, for a record of 6-1. It’s clear the Cyclones like this look, which sucks, because I think it looks WAY better inverted. The Block I logo really pops on a white shell, and when paired with red pants and a red facemask, it tends to pop more. Here, it just kind of blends in. I am overall a HUGE fan of the Iowa State uniform update - way more than I was when they were released - but I’ve been let down by not seeing my favorite away combo of White/White Red. Regardless, these looked excellent against KU’s Blackhawk combo.

Speaking of the Blackhawk combo, I get that this is a big game suit. It was certainly worn in a big game! But KU has hammered the alternates really hard this season, wearing one in 4/9 games thus far. I would have loved to see more of their traditional blue. Here’s a weird stat for you, KU has only worn their traditional blue jerseys ONCE this season, and articles of the traditional blue have only appeared in 3 games (by which I mean traditional blue helmet, jersey, or pants). I’m all for switching it up and finding variety. In fact, I often preach that to a fault! But it seems like KU is losing out on opportunities to show off that gorgeous blue main color in favor of red or black, which most KU fans I know take issue with. Again, the look is incredible, and one of the best blackout suits I’ve seen in modern memory, just remember that KU’s identity is Crimson and Blue above all.

University of Colorado Buffaloes at Texas Tech University Red Raiders (TTU Wins, 41-27)

CU: Black/White/Black (Link: )

TTU: Gray/Gray/Gray (Link: )

Tortillas (and maaaaybe some other things) flew in this raucous Lubbock atmosphere as the Buffaloes looked to get to 7-2. This was the two team’s first meeting since 2010. The Red Raiders found themselves with a 13-0 lead after the first quarter, firmly in control of the game. But Colorado struck back hard, getting 31 points to Tech’s 7 between the 2nd and 4th quarter and enjoying a big defensive day, finishing with 10 TFLs and six sacks. Texas Tech clawed their way back with some great passes from QB Behren Morton, but a scoop and score (one of three this weekend in the Big 12, I’m pretty sure) put the game firmly away in CU’s favor. The Red Raiders dropped back-to-back home games for the first time since 2021, but still found bright spots in this game. RB Tahj Brooks rushed for 137 yards to succeed Byron Hanspard as the school’s career rushing yard leader. And hey, TTU is still 6-4, a big step up from last year, with a shot to win out! They face OK-State after a bye week, while the Buffs host Utah next.

We’ve seen gray used in some successful instances through the Big 12 season so far. UNLV’s all gray look comes to mind, and Colorado’s gray look from a week or two ago is also nice. Here though, it seems different. I like aspects of it! I think the galvanized steel/metallic font is neat. I don’t think we’ve seen anything like that for a long time, excluding chrome helmets. But there are some odd choices from Mahomes here. First, the giant “TECH” feels ominously similar to the disastrous “S  T  A  T  E” uniforms from the MSU Spartans up north. Second, the galvanized pattern on top of the already gray suit feels way too match-y. Numbers are supposed to contrast! The red outline does some of the job here, but imagine if the base suit was black, or even red! The metallic font would stand out so much better while still maintaining a fun alternate status. Again, the red accents/facemask, the helmet, the “steel” idea is great, and the Mahomes logo looks nice. Aside from a few details, these are fine. Maybe next time he’ll go for a more standard Tech color.

Colorado went back to the Oreo look, one we saw last year against Arizona State. In that one, they wore their metallic gold logo and facemask. Here we see a white facemask and a less glitzy logo, and I think it suits the look much better! The mountains on the shoulders continue to be a great and unique addition to the suits, but their weird addition to the pants still makes me scratch my head. Why would you turn the mountains sideways like that? Not often mentioned is the front helmet bumper here, labeled with “S2S.” Doing some digging, S2S stands for shoulder-to-shoulder, and it’s the name for a mentorship program at CU, one that matches freshmen and rookie student-athletes with local and national local football alumni, in an effort to establish a more rooted connection to Colorado’s history and football tradition while creating broader networks. I hadn’t heard of it, but it’s a wonderful touch! I put last year’s Oreo combo at #11 out of 12 combos worn, I think I would put this one higher!
