Last July I was solo-tripping through Europe, where Copenhagen was my last stop before starting my MA/PhD in Economics (I’m Indian-American from the US was starting graduate school back there) On the last night, I decided to go on a CPH pub-crawl just for the fun of it.

There is a group of Indian folks my age at the pub-crawl and though I’m initially shy, I eventually meet them to say hello and make friends.

After the last bar, they decide to leave the crawl. Luckily for me, I had the insta of one of the girls and message her asking them where they went. She told me and I hurry to make my way over to them - across the street from the last bar.

Here I meet this boy from their squad. I decide that we should all go to another bar and he volunteers to navigate us there. He says his name to me but I somehow am pretty buzzed and do not understand it.

On the way there, we chat a little. About our alma matters and what we do for work. I have no clue why, but I have butterflies and have a little crush on this boy I just met.

We get there. The bar is closed. Or it doesn’t exist. Regardless, since this is Copenhagen, the canals are swimmable. And so I hatch this plan — I ask him if he wants to jump into the water with me. It’s the dead of the night. He says yes.

We take off our clothes and I convince him it won’t be terribly cold. We count to three and jump in.

He’s staying at a hostel near the canals but still offers to walk me back to my airbnb (15 minutes away). He walks me there, I invite him up. We talk in the balcony. We listen to Uff Teri Ada. We share a bottle of wine (from the bottle). I kiss him.

Fast forward a year, a continent away, lots of long distance and the summer living together later. That boy I fell in love with at first sight is my safest space and my biggest excitement. We still drink wine from the bottle, shut down restaurants and dance till the AM. We talk for hours and have kinky, funky, sexy time. We play games, have debates and eat street chaaat.

He is my home in every way and I am the luckiest woman to have found a love so real an entire world away.
