Once again, Purdue came close to leaving the ranks of the honorary unwinfeated this week. The Boilermakers had the ball and all three timeouts in a tie game with just under two minutes left against Northwestern. They were promptly sacked, went three and out, turned hte ball over on downs on their overtime possession, and simply forgot to cover a Northwestern receiver on consecutive plays in OT.
Elsewhere it was a banner week for our FCS Unwinfeateds, as three grabbed their first wins of the season.
Unwinfeated - Teams in the major conferences (plus Notre Dame, Washington State, and Oregon State) that are completely winless.
Power 4 Honorary Unwinfeated - Teams in the above category whose lone win is over an FCS team, because there is no valid excuse for a Power 4 team to lose to an FCS team not from the Dakotas.
Group of Five Unwinfeated - Group of five teams that are winless (they get a pass vs. FCS because a lot of FCS teams are much closer to them than Power 5 teams).
FCS Unwinfeated - FCS teams that are winless
SPECIAL CATEGORY FOR AGGRESSIVELY PURSUING DEFEAT
Michigan State - (4-5) - Sure, it was against the juggernaut that is Indiana (really odd to say), but the Spartans got out to a 10-0 lead after a quarter and looked like they might spring a home upset. Instead, they did virtually nothing for the three remaining quarters. I award you .25 of a win and assign .25 of a loss to Indiana. #9Windiana is, therefore, still waiting as they are now 8.75-0.25.
POWER 4 UNWINFEATED
NONE
HONORARY UNWINFEATED
Leaving the watch: Mississippi State - Congrats to the Bulldogs for a 45-20 win over UMass! No can they get a conference win? Mississippi State, Purdue, Oklahoma State, and Cal are now the only major conference teams without a league win. It should also be noted that Cal is the lone team keeping Florida State from being completely unwinfeated.
Purdue - 1-7 - As mentioned above, the Boilermakers blew a very winnable game at home and fell in overtime to Northwestern 26-20. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after Purdue’s fourth down play in OT meant the Wildcats had to start their possession on the 40 instead of the 25. That meant there was one faint chance still to force another overtime, but go find thehighlights. the Wildcats scored in two plays, both where there was not a defender within 10 yards of the receiver.
GROUP OF FIVE UNWINFEATED
Leaving the watch: None
Kent State - 0-8 (with a loss to FCS St. Francis (PA) - On Bye. Maybe Purdue should play Kent State and the loser gets Darrell Hazell back.
FCS UNWINFEATED
Leaving the watch: Fordham - The Rams beat Colgate 20-14 to notch a victory, VMI - The Keydets beat Furman 21-17 to get their first win of the season., Utah Tech - The Trailbazers hosted Central Arkansas and came away with a comfortable 34-21 win.
Marist - 0-9 - Marist is not like us, as they don’t have a win after losing to Drake 19-0.
Northwestern State - 0-9 - On BYE
Mississippi Valley State - 0-9 - Jerry Rice U was so close, but lost to Prairie View 17-16. The Delta Devils went for two on a TD with 1:47 left, but could not pull it off.
