This guy is an acquaintence of mine, and he’s a terrible communicator. I think he’s a piece of shit (POS). Supposedly he behaves like this because he has autism and ADHD, but I have my doubts because I’ve met a lot of other people with autism and/or ADHD and literally none of them behave like this. Still, I recognize that these (and other) conditions affect each individual differently.
Here’s a typical interaction with the POS. I was telling the group (it’s a meetup group) “My friend got a new job with AT&T–”, and even before I could finish one sentence, the POS barked at me “So go join them then! Now you want to work for AT&T??? GO!” Another example: I was saying “My cousin registered to vote–”, and the POS immediately cut me off shouting “So what? He can’t do that? People can’t register to vote now???”
POS doesn’t do this every single time, but it happens quite often, and it’s absolutely bizarre behavior.
I used to shrivel up and be like “no, um, sowwy, I wasn’t meaning to suggest I wanted to work for AT&T, hehe, sowwy”, or “oh, sowwy, I wasn’t saying people can’t register to vote, hehe, I was just saying my cousin registered to vote, I wasn’t saying it’s a bad thing, sowwy”, but it never defused the situation and it certainly didn’t lead to change in POS’s behavior. If anything, POS seemed empowered.
One day, I had the idea to dish it back, like “What the fuck are you talking about? When the hell did I say people can’t register to vote?”
I mentioned to the group (again, it’s a meetup group) that “I used to volunteer with OrgX–” and, as usual, POS immediately interrupted me and yelled “So go volunteer with them! GREAT! What do I care!!!”
I dished back with “Did I fucking say that I’m going to volunteer with them again?”
The POS went silent, with his eyes wide. He looked absolutely shocked. Deer in the headlights.
Then he regained his previous state and shouted “Don’t raise your voice at me!”, which is very ironic, and also I hadn’t actually raised my voice thus far. Then I did raise my voice and shouted back in the same tone, “Don’t raise your voice at me!”
The POS again looked shocked, then totally defeated. He said meekly “OK, fine, whatever.” He didn’t interrupt me again for the rest of that meetup. I suspect he’ll revert back to his normal behavior next time and I’ll need to train him again.
