Just think about it. University of Central Florida really doesn’t sound like a power conference school, but Florida Tech does. All but one of the FBS “[State] Tech” schools are in power conferences. “University of Central Florida” sounds like where you learn how to dress like Snow White at Disney World and fight alligators off golf courses.
This lets UCF shed that association and any possible confusion with USF a little easier because they wouldn’t sound like counterparts to each other, but instead distinct entities and it makes UCF sound much more impressive.
Then there’s the Citronauts nickname. This is actually cool. Pays homage to the legacy of NASA in Florida and the abundance of oranges while being entirely unique. Compare that to the “Knights.” Blech, you might as well be a middle school club rugby team with a nickname like that.
Now sure, there’s one problem in that Florida Institute of Technology already exists, but I’m sure there’s enough smart people in Florida to find away around that, like naming themselves Florida Tech University instead and just swiping the trademark to Florida Tech and then telling FIT to piss off because of sovereign immunity or some legal nonsense.
The things that make college football special are the weird and the unique aspects of the sport, along with people and institutions figuring out how to legitimize their presence in the big boys’ club. This is all just statecraft and marketing. At the end of the day, why did all the newer schools opt to make their school songs in the same style to the same turn-of-the-20th-century marches as Ohio State, Notre Dame, and Michigan? For the exact same reasons nations in central Africa and southeast Asia made their national anthems in the same style as Prussian war marches and their dictators/generals style themselves in the same fashion as WW1 military leaders - by adopting the same stylings as the established powers, you appear more legitimate.
So be weird and unique, but weird and unique in the same way as the Florida States and Georgia Techs of the world instead of the Middle Tennessee States. You’re in the club, so dress like it, right?
Lastly, it’s not fair that only the ACC gets a Techmo Bowl, right?
