Welcome to week 8 of the r/NFL Power Rankings! Week 8 kicked off Thursday with McVay showing O’Connell who’s mentor and who’s the manatee, and ended Monday with a classic Russell Wilson bomb fresh in our feeds. After a close loss, Doug Pederson is still? the Jacksonville coach. After a fourth consecutive not-so-close loss, Dennis Allen’s job security seems to be resting in another dimension. Can Eberflus dig deep and flip his lackadaisical perception around? How long will Detroit continue to play professional teams like they’re NCAA? Does a Richardson benching make the Colts better? Discuss! 30/32 Reporting

1. Chiefs – 7-0 With the win on Sunday Andy Reid is officially the winningest coach at Allegiant Stadium with 6 wins and 0 losses. The Chiefs haven’t been a team that is generating a ton on the stat sheet on either side of the ball but they are doing enough to win comfortably despite that. Through 7 games we are -3 in turnover differential, we’re 21st in sacks per game and yet we’re only allowing 17.6 points per game and haven’t allowed a team to score more than 26 points since December 3rd, 2023, and more than 27 since the Super Bowl against the Eagles. Mahomes has thrown 8 touchdowns and 9 interceptions and yet the Chiefs are still averaging 24.7 points per game. This is simply a team that knows how to win games and they continue to show that week in and week out.
2. Lions – 6-1 “I am grateful to God for the opportunity to work for [Dan Campbell], man.” ~ Dave Fipp accepting his game ball for a dominant special teams performance. The entire locker room, entire organization, and the entire (genuine) fanbase is 100% behind that man. Unreal. The Lions had fewer 1st downs (17 – 23), total plays (47 – 71), total yards (225 – 416), and were out-possessed (24:23 – 35:37) against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. They won 52 – 14. If you didn’t watch this game, you should, because it is the wackiest football game I have ever seen. David Montgomery might have the prettiest spiral in the league. Jack Fox averaged 61 yards on his 5 punts, with a long of 67. Kalif Raymond had punt returns of 64 and 90 yards, with Khalil Dorsey adding a kickoff return of 72 yards. When Tennessee was driving I was expecting a turnover, and most of the time that expectation would be vindicated. WTF I love this team. Next week is a big one against GB; let’s get it.
3. Bills +2 6-2 That’s a way to make a statement! The 3 game-winning streak continued as the Bills dominated the Seahawks from the get-go. The offensive trio of Coleman Cook and Shakir was clicking all day encapsulated by a 9-minute opening drive that resulted in a sick Keon Coleman one-handed grab. Also, shout to Mac and Cheese Hollins for a fumble recovery and Andre Johnson for a pivotal interception. The only blemish on the stat line for Buffalo was a season-high 13 penalties a recurring problem that needs to be addressed. Buffalo will look to continue the win streak as they encounter a divisional matchup with the 2-5 Dolphins.
4. Ravens -1 5-3 Last week I, rather foolishly, described the Ravens matchup with the Browns as “unjinxable”. It turns out that a divisional road game on a short week after a primetime road game can override a rather hefty talent disparity. Game circumstances aside the Browns deserve a ton of credit for their win this week. This matchup wasn’t reminiscent of the Ravens sleepwalking against the Raiders foolishly believing they could put the game away when needed. Aside from a few errant Jameis Winston passes this was an incredibly well executed game from the Browns and was more indicative of the wild card team they rostered last season. It’ll be interesting to see if they continue to benefit from addition by subtraction at the QB position. The Ravens defense on the other hand is officially a 10-alarm tire fire that needs addressing now. Allowing Winston to come off the bench and throw for 320 yards without a true WR1 can no longer be written off as “growing pains”.
5. Packers +2 6-2 EPA/play leader Malik Willis shows off another Masterclass performance with some elite clutch plays to hold the Jaguars at bay and give the Packers another W! Games like this are why the Packers made him the highest paid quarterback in the league! hold on I’m getting something in my ear here hold on … l’m being told Malik Willis is the backup and we gave 55 million dollars a year to another guy. Would you look at that the other guy leads the league in touchdown rate and sack rate despite being hobbled with multiple lower body injuries! The Packers truly are spoiled, aren’t we?
6. Vikings -2 5-2 Sam Darnold played really well on Thursday Night Football, but Matt Stafford just played better, adjusting every protection to pick up all of Flores’ exotic blitzes and knowing where to find the holes in the zones. Injuries are starting to mount for Minnesota: Christian Darrisaw (knee), Blake Cashman (Toe), the Referees (eyes). But healthy or not, the Vikings now get a chance to end their sudden losing streak at home versus Joe Flacco’s Colts in primetime.
7. Texans -1 6-2 I feel like I could just set up these blurbs on autocue by now. Joe Mixon is the man, this O-Line is going to get CJ Stroud killed, and the defense barely held on to win an ugly game. Alright, same time next week? Next up is a trip to MetLife on a short week without Nico Collins or Stefon Diggs. If they can escape relatively injury free, they should begin returning key players from IR in time for a brutal back half of the season.
8. Commanders – 6-2 This is it. After this, I’m officially done. This, is the last time. This is the last time I will talk about Dan Snyder here. This is the last time I’ll give that scumbag a bit of rent free living in my head. But, just this one last time, let me say: Fuck You Dan. I hope you woke up today, looked your gaudy, greasy ass self in your probably gold-plated mirror you got by selling access to some poor young girl to some creepy old fuck, and realized you were the problem. I hope your stomach has dropped week after week as this team gets better and better, the creeping understanding that the team, the fanbase, and the world are better with you uninvolved; we’re all better off without you, Dan. I hope your nuts twist in your pants every time you hear someone refer to this as a team of destiny, and think to yourself “why not when I was the owner?” and a caviar-fed salted tear builds up and burns your stupid ass little billionaire eyeball. Why? Because fuck you, that’s why. This is the last time, because after Sunday’s game, it’s clear to me that the franchise is washed of the Snyder stench. This team is being helped by the football gods, and it’s a damn reward after 30 years of trash tier play that we fans had to be subjected to because Snyder’s scumbaggery and self-aggrandizement couldn’t sit down and let professionals work. Tell me there’s no clearer evidence of a new day in Washington than the insane luck that comes with this win sending us to an NFC East leading 6-2 record; there isn’t. This team is different. This team is special. This is a team that can rekindle the legacy of greatness this franchise once had. Maybe the franchise is on its way back to being worthy of consideration as anything other than everyone else’s punching bag and get-right game. Now, for some actual analysis, I’m no film expert; let’s start by acknowledging the Washington defense has no business being as good as it is with the talent it had coming into this season - unbelievable improvement that can only be attributed to coaching and a GM that acquired some key players to make this work. Game ball goes to them. But I have to use the last words of my already lengthy blurb (sorry) to talk about Jayden Daniels… this guy is special. He has an incredibly high talent level, his joy for the game is evident on every play, and he’s elevating this team to something none of us had any right to expect. Terry McLaurin seems to finally be unlocking his actual potential with a QB who can actually deliver him the ball. It’s incredible to watch. And in his post game chat with Washington legends Santana Moss and Brian Mitchell, Jayden attributed this success, this lucky “Noah’s Arc” to “living right”. To being better in life than you are at the game, and that “living right” pays dividends in the game. Good things happening to good people. And that’s why you get fucked, Snyder. Hail fellow Washington fans. Let’s enjoy this moment.
9. Steelers – 6-2 Once again, the Steelers are back atop the AFC North with a brand of football that is effective, but perhaps not easy to believe in. In all three phases of the game, offense, defense, and special teams, the play has been at worst passable and at best superlative. Playmaking, especially on defense, seems so random, yet at some point it happens regularly enough that it can be counted on as part of the overall plan. Against the Giants, the Steelers certainly bent, but they didn’t break. They also showed again that they’re a 2nd half team, despite the Giants really staying in it and turning up the h…
