Hello r/CFB! Welcome to the 2024 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 8!  Unlike last week, we had zero byes, and a very full schedule to get through, filled with close calls, nice outfits, and more Big 12 chaos. In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog every Big 12 team’s uniform combination week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s threads. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. Big, big games this time around, let’s check them out!

I’m u/matte_purple, and let’s 3,2,1 go!

Brigham Young University Cougars vs Oklahoma State Cowboys (BYU Wins, 38-35)

BYU: White/Royal/White (Link: )

OSU: Black/White/Black (Link: )

The Cowboys were 10 seconds away from one of the biggest upsets of the Big 12 season. A back and forth, heart stopping battle peaked with a 35-yd touchdown pass from QB Jake Retzlaff in the final 20 seconds. Afterwards, the QB said “It’s magical. It’s spiritual; how can you not be romantic about this game?” A great game all around, the Cowboys finally found a groove for Ollie Gordon III - the Doak-Walker award winner last year. He had been stopped in his tracks for most of the season, but rushed for 107 yds and two TDs on the ground. The team had 269 rushing yds of their total 421.  Oklahoma State QB Garrett Rangel showed plenty of promise, but went out with an injury right before halftime. Hopefully he and Ollie Gordon will be able to continue the momentum - despite the loss - and get healthy. As for the Cougars, they are 7-0 after a dramatic win, and look poised to remain at the top of the Big 12, three INTs notwithstanding.

BYU wore an incredibly similar look compared to last week - only substituting a blue facemask for a white one. The same general idea applies! There’s something about that white sandwiching the royal blue that looks so classic. These date back to 1969, were worn by BYU in their 1984 national title season, and were brought back to wide acclaim in 2009. They have been worn frequently ever since.  BYU has worn white pants 6 games in a row now, the only deviation being royal pants in Week 1, which feels weird, but obviously inconsequential. I do like the blue facemask better than the white one here, but it’s a fairly minute change.

Because BYU released their uniform schedule early, I got a chance to predict the looks of some matchups. In this one, I was really hoping we’d see as much orange as possible for an away suit - likely an Orange/White(Orange Font)/Orange - with an orange brand logo. What we got was still awesome! A classic Oreo combo emphasizing black instead of orange, this suit has now been worn 12 times since 2011 (with a 7-5 record). But it’s only been worn twice since I’ve been tracking them in - now and against TCU in 2022. The look vs TCU was one of my favorite ones for the 2022 Cowboys, and it made a nice reappearance here in all its updated glory. The symmetry of the Black/White/Black makes the senses click. The logo, numbers, and striping add a perfect punch of orange to a very dark away uniform. The logo itself is vertical, unique, and hard to pull off, but OSU makes it work quite well. A gorgeous look. Fun fact: This helmet only has one win for the Cowboys (1-3) since its debut in 2022 - and it’s still one of my favorites. Plus, Full Body Pete has never been worn with a black shell AND orange facemask. Could be an interesting look!

University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs Arizona State Sun Devils (UC Wins, 24-14)

ASU: Maroon/White/White (Link: )

UC: Red/Red/Red (Link: )

Both of these teams entered Nippert Stadium with something to prove, each with a chance to continue proving the preseason doubters wrong. QB Sam Leavitt was marked out for the game, but the Sun Devils looked to be in the driver’s seat after a quick score and big interception on Cincinnati’s first possession. Then star RB Cam Skattebo fumbled. All of the momentum shifted, with Evan Pryor, Brendan Sorsby, Corey Kiner, and a salty Cincinnati defense carrying the Bearcats to a win. QB Brendan Sorsby continues to prove himself, passing for 206 yds and rushing for 2 scores. RB Evan Pyror’s had a massive 55-yd TD run early in the second quarter, which was his third rushing TD of 50+ yds this season. It was also the Bearcats’ 14th play of 40+ yards this season. The Bearcat’s held Skattebo to over 50 yards below his season average at only 75 yds. ASU will head to Oklahoma State after a bye week, while Cincinnati heads to Boulder, CO for a late night game this weekend.

After wearing the “Maroon Eclipse” uniforms last week (so dubbed by the great Cole Streeper aka @ASU_Uniformity on Twitter - please give his articles a read!), the Sun Devils wore a very nice maroon lid on top of an all-white suit. While I think maroon pants would have looked better with this combo, the equipment room undoubtedly knew they would be facing an all-red Bearcat’s team, and chose a great suit accordingly. My maroon pants preference isn’t really even that strong. ASU looks great in every color, and I appreciate how the white facemask and decal link the helmet to the rest of the suit. Of course, I have to bring up the color shifting paint on the maroon helmets,  introduced in 2021. I hope that they soon redo the paint, as I feel they detract from ASU’s overall color strength. Other than that, a very nice set!

Cincinnati donned all red for the first time since the American’s conference championship game vs Tulane back in 2022. I go so back and forth on these suits. On the one hand, it takes guts to wear this STARK red suit against a team who also wears red. There’s something about this particular shade of red that really works. On the other hand, it’s a lot! I think it being so “in your face” was probably the point, but still. It is just a tad hard on the eyes. I’d probably give it a strong 6.5 out of ten, upgrading it to 7 for a nice powerful homecoming look. As I’ve said before, I think Cincy looks best when going for monochrome with little pops of red, but this is a neat deviation I can respect.

University of Kansas Jayhawks vs University of Houston Cougars (UH Wins, 42-14)

UH: Red/White/Red (Link: )

KU: Blue/Blue/Blue (Link: )

Kansas constantly put themselves in great positions in this game, and FINALLY their offense delivered, breaking a five game losing streak in their “destination” Homecoming game. Jayhawk CB Cobee Bryant had 3 INTs this one, and QB Jalon Daniels looked like the player most national media expected him to be, throwing for three TDs, notching another one on the ground, and tossing the ball to 7 different receivers through the game for 247 yds, including a beautiful 40+ yd pass to WR Quentin Skinner in the endzone. Houston came into the game third in the Big 12 in total yards allowed PER GAME at 295, but they gave up 284 of KU’s 467 total yards in the first half. The subpar showing from the Coog’s 1st half defense coupled with those INT’s from QBs Smith and Chris sealed the deal for Houston. KU can only lose one more game if they want a chance to be bowl eligible, and they’ll fight a K-State team with momentum Saturday night in the Little Apple for homecoming. Houston hosts Utah on the same day.

Wanna know something a little strange? This was the first time that Kansas wore their standard blue jerseys all season. It’s been 7 games! This particular outfit tends to be worn once or twice a year, usually with a blue or white facemask variant thrown in. I’ll almost always prefer the Jayhawk on a white shell over the blue, but in general I’d just prefer any article here being a different color. This particular shock of blue just works best when cut with more color. It’s a better monochrome suit than an all-red, but there are just some nicer looks that use the blue a tiny bit less. Add in some red or white pants, maybe keep the blue pants and go with a white helmet and you’ve got a much better suit. Still not bad, and I’m glad we saw the blue jerseys for the first time in a 2024 game!

Houston went with the basics in this game, wearing the peppermint look seen most frequently since their update (5 times since 2022, for a record of 1-5). Adding the red pants is an easy way to make Houston pop, especially against the Kansas blue. This is a nice combo, and one of my favorite away looks, but I’m a little surprised we haven’t seen the script Cougar’s logo on a helmet yet this season. We’ve seen the Houston wordmark, but not the Cougar’s script. I think the weakest part of Houston’s identity is their block logo, and switching it up sometimes is a nice change. Also, are the “Luv Ya” Blue alternates going to make an appearance? They have three more home games!

University of Arizona Wildcats vs University of Colorado Buffaloes (CU Wins, 34-7)

CU: Black/White/White (Link: )

Arizona: White/Red/Red (Link: )

From the start - Arizona opening with a failed onside kick - the Wildcats looked…
