I (19F) am a college student interested in tech who wants to leave my home state of California after I graduate. (This state is great, but I have been here all my life and I want to experience something new.) Many people are telling me to move to Austin, Texas because it is “cheaper” (for now lol) and the job market is expanding rapidly.

First of all, unplanned pregnancy can be one of the most detrimental things to a woman’s career. Why would I move to a state, FOR my career, that provides me with zero protection against this? Birth control fails all the time. Do the people recommending me to move to Texas just not consider this?

Second, why is the job market even growing? Why are people (and women) moving to Texas, now of all times? Do they just not care about the abortion practices there? Is there a mentality of “it won’t happen to me” or “if I get pregnant, I’ll fly to a different state to get an abortion”? Or something else entirely?

I’m just lost on how so many people - women, mainly - care so little. Or, do I just care “too much”? How much would you all prioritize abortion rights in a place you want to move to? I want to hear your thoughts.
