Something we see time and time again in the NFL is a team jumps out to a hot start and builds a lead, and then they follow conventional wisdom and try to run clock by forcing more runs and short yardage throws to keep the clock moving.
Last night we saw this in the Tampa Bay - Atlanta game. TB built a lead on the back of Baker Laser Mayfield who was absolutely cooking. Aaaand then in the second half abandoned what got them there in favor of a more run heavy attack. I mean Baker somehow only throws 9 total passes in the second half! Only 2 of them that go for over 10 yards.
My hypothesis is that good offensive teams, like the Bucs, should not adjust their play calling when they have a lead of less than 3 touchdowns, even deep into the 3rd and the into the 4th quarters. They should be scheming as if they are down a touchdown each drive. Push the pace, extend the lead. You know what really burns the clock? A 4 minute touchdown drive by your own team and then however long it takes your opponent to match it.
I’ll hang up and listen.
