I am providing an update on this post. The stat got some play in the media, led to some reporters seeking answers from BYU coaches on the trend, posts from BYU social media, and now some of our fans have adopted the “Vampire Cougs” nickname for the team.
So, following our 38-9 night time victory over #13 Kansas State this week, I crunched some more numbers back to 2019 to see if the trend has continued:
- Since 2019 BYU is now 28-3 in full night games, 8-5 in games with partial darkness (sun sets during the game), and 9-14 in full day games.
- When you remove FCS games, the stats are even more stark. BYU was only 5-14 in full day games (26%) and 28-3 at night (90%). BYU has lost 10 straight full day games against FBS opponents.
- BYU is 7-2 (77%) against ranked opponents with no sunlight, which is higher than its win percentage against G5 teams with sunlight 8-8 (50%).
Interestingly, I also crunched the numbers back to 2013. Prior to 2019, BYU was 17-17 in full night games and 28-16 in games with sunlight. So, something happened in 2019 that triggered the vampire transformation. I’m not sure about the cause, but flagging that BYU students visited Transylvania in 2019-2020 and published a story in the BYU magazine…
