Counting down to the beginning of the season I’m going to attempt to post one player per day for the last 99 matching their jersey number to the days left until kick off. The players will be random. Use this thread to celebrate and Talk About Some DudesTM
Despite starring at Salem High School and setting state records in New Jersey Jonathan Taylor was a generic three star with only p5 offers from Wisconsin, BC, and VT. He chose Wisconsin and went from freshman co-starter in 2017 (with two others) to Wisconsin legend in just three short years.
Taylor didn’t take long to make an impact. Game one saw him put up 87 yards and a TD on just nine carries. Game two saw him put up three touchdowns and 223 yards. Game five saw him tally 249 yards and two touchdowns against Nebraska and enter the Heisman conversation. It took him just seven games to reach 1,000 yards matching the record set by Emmitt Smith, Marshall Faulk, Adrian Peterson and others. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the week a record 8 times. Jonathan was consensus first-team All-Big Ten, second-team All-American, finished sixth in the Heisman balloting and finished with the official freshman record for yards: 1977 (Ron Dayne ran for 2109 but his bowl yardage doesn’t count, officially). He led the Big Ten in rushing and finished third in all of FBS and second only to Saquon Barkley in rushing TDs in the Big Ten. He was the Big Ten Freshman of the year and the Badgers won 13 games for the first time ever.
2018 saw him named to preseason All-America lists and award watch lists. He would not disappoint. He had five 200 yard games in his sophomore year. He had five multi-TD games. He lead all of FBS in rushing, finished in the top ten in yards per rush (7.1) and rushing TDs (16). He added a ninth place Heisman finish to his resume. His 307 attempts, 2194 yards and 16 TDs netted him first-team All-Big Ten awards again, big Ten running back of the year, and unanimous All-American honors. He also won Doak Walker award for the nation’s best running back.
His final year in Madison was 2019. Taylor continued to stamp his name in Wisconsin history with another four 200 yard rushing performances and 7 multi-TD games. He was the first Badger to ever rush for 200 yards against Michigan. He again carried Wisconsin to the Big Ten title game. He tallied a career high 320 attempts and 21 touchdowns along with a Big Ten leading 2003 yards. He lead the league in rushing for three consecutive years - a feat only he and Archie Griffin ever accomplished. He became just the second back to ever two 2,000 yard seasons. He was again a unanimous first-team All-American, first-team All-Big Ten, and Big Ten Running back of the year. He finished fifth in the Heisman balloting. He retained possession of the Doak Walker award joining only Ricky Williams and Darren McFadden as the only two-time winners.
Het set FBS records with 12 career 200-yard games, most rushing yards through a junior season (6174), most rushing yards through sophomore season (4171), most rushing yards by a freshman (1977) and fewest games to achieve 1000 rushing yards as a freshman (7 - tied with 6 others).
He elected to forgo his senior season and was drafted with the 41st pick of the 2020 draft by the Indianapolis Colts.
He was a member of the PFWA All-Rookie team in 2020. Taylor won the rushing yards and TD titles in 2021 and was named first-team All-Pro along with being named to the Pro Bowl.
