Welcome to the official r/nfl week 2 power rankings, what a crazy week! Kirko pulled a win out thanks to Saquon’s only misstep of the game, CJ Stroud is hope for a brighter tomorrow, and are the Cardinals for real for real? Kansas City won by a bleached blond hair length, Green Bay found a way to win on the ground, and New Orleans doesn’t seem to care who they’ll drop 50 on next week. Is it time for Baltimore to panic? Are the Bucs as legit as the Saints? Will the Giants rethink their 52 man strategy? Discuss! 27/32 Reporting
| # | Team | Δ | Record | Comment | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Chiefs | – | 2-0 | Learning to win ugly is an underrated skill. There’s something about the Burrow Bengals, that team manages to play the Chiefs close no matter what is going on in the world. Once again the matchup was ridiculously tight, coming down to the team with the ball last. There are some genuine concerns that have reared their ugly head at this point, Pacheco is out for 6-8 weeks, Suamataia had no answer for Hendrickson, Mahomes had one of the worst games of his career. Still, the Chiefs managed to beat a preseason Super Bowl contender while playing relatively poorly, which is exactly what the #1 team in the NFL needs to be able to do. Finally, shout out to Bo Nix and the Denver Broncos for continuing to look like steaming garbage and bringing me so much joy. Keep up the good work. | |
| 2. | Bills | +6 | 2-0 | ||
| 3. | Texans | +2 | 2-0 | It wasn’t pretty, but a win’s a win. 12 penalties is unsustainable and CJ Stroud was effectively kept in check for the second half of the game, but the Texans D came to play with 7 sacks on Caleb Williams. | |
| 4. | 49ers | -2 | 1-1 | After looking like a machine on MNF, the 49ers came into Sunday a different team. The offense stalled, only going 2/10 on 3rd down, and turning the ball over on downs twice. Purdy had an interception and some egregious misthrows. The defense was bailed out by the big plays from Fred Warner and Nick Bosa, but overall played a mediocre game. They could not get off the field on 3rd down, allowing the vikings to convert 7/12. They also allowed the longest td allowed in franchise history on the Justin Jefferson 97 yard TD. The special teams had a punt blocked as well. The team looks to right itself, now without Deebo, against the Rams in LA on Sunday. | |
| 5. | Lions | -2 | 1-1 | There was a good amount of really bad and a small amount of really good happening in Detroit on Sunday afternoon, as the Lions fell to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 16 – 20. Game two of the offense looking just kinda weird is unfortunate, though there is optimism that Ben Johnson and Jared Goff, who have a nice track record of a couple years of being offensively great, can figure it out. Yardage was not a problem against Tampa Bay, as the Lions outgained the Bucs 463 to 216 along with almost double the 1st downs, 26 to 14. The problems came in the red zone, where Detroit was 1-7 with an interception and whatever the blunder was that ended the half. On the bright side, the defense played pretty well (outside of containing Mayfield a couple times) and Aidan Hutchinson followed up his great game against LA with FOUR AND A HALF sacks on Sunday. If the offense can get back to being the most efficient in the league in the redzone (2nd in the league last season) and Amon Ra St. Brown can avoid serious injury, Detroit will be just fine. Shoutout Tampa Bay and Baker; they are legit. | |
| 6. | Buccaneers | +5 | 2-0 | My heart goes out to the families of the fans that lost their life after the game. | |
| 7. | Saints | +13 | 2-0 | ||
| 8. | Eagles | -2 | 1-1 | The Eagles’ win probability sat around 99% towards the end of MNF and four things all had to go wrong for them to lose: 1) Kellen Moore needed to call a pass play that went incomplete on 3rd down against a team without any timeouts (1b, in defense of the playcall, Saquon, who was having an excellent game, needed to drop it), 2) while not obvious, the Eagles needed to opt for the FG, which both forced the Falcons to need a TD to win the game (and thus 4 downs) as opposed to playing more conservatively for a FG to tie and send to OT, and also gave Kirk more yardage to work with, 3) the defense needed to turn into absolute Swiss cheese to let 2024 Kirk Cousins look like he was playing at 1pm in week 6 with 90 seconds and no timeouts, and 4) for Jalen, with a decent amount of clock and not a lot of yards needed for Jake Elliot’s FG range, to throw a pick. All four of those things happened in the final minute and a half of MNF, and the Eagles lost as a result. Who’s to blame?! Well, me, for caring. Next up, checks notes ah fuck. | |
| 9. | Cowboys | -2 | 1-1 | Double kryptonite weeks are no fair. Derek Carr running a Shanahan tree offense may as well be prime Dan Marino if Dallas concerned. | |
| 10. | Vikings | +13 | 2-0 | They said it couldn’t be done, folks. The fake news r/nfl power rankers said the San Fran-Shithole 49ers couldn’t be beat, but the GEQBUS won this game, BY A LOT! Look, having nuclear — his grandfather was a great man, great man, Captain Dick Hammer — you know, the mainstream media doesn’t want you to know this, grandson of the literal Marlboro Man — that’s why I always start off, good genes, very good genes, OK? Very smart, top-3 pick, USC, Dick Hammer. I mean, this Sam Darnold — big guy, strong arm. The strongest! 97 yards! A game-sealing drive, seven minutes, no Justin Jefferson, no Jordan Addison, no TJ Hockenson, no problem. And that Vikings defense — WOW! Six sacks, six PBUs, two beautiful interceptions, Puny Purdy didn’t even have the concept of a plan for Brian Flores’ scheme. No plan! We are winning bigly, folks: GEQBUS – 2; would-be GEQBUS (character) assassins – 0, zilch, nada! | |
| 11. | Ravens | -7 | 0-2 | ~10%. That’s the playoff odds the Ravens are staring down after a disastrous 0-2 start. Derrick Henry rushed for 84 yards and a TD, Zay Flowers had 91 yards receiving with a score, Lamar totaled nearly 300 yards of offense, and they sacked Minshew 5 times. Despite all that they allowed Maxx Crosby and Davante Adams to be absolute game wreckers in the biggest moments and that’s inexcusable. The upside is the Ravens are extremely healthy and their major shortcomings(Offensive line, defensive coordination) were expected and should show improvement. Unfortunately with a slate of @Dallas, Buffalo, and @Cincy coming up the margin for error is razor thin and the potential of an extremely talented roster may well be too little too late. | |
| 12. | Chargers | +7 | 2-0 | If you were to travel back a year from today and tell any Chargers fan that you’re a time traveler who has come to warn them of a falling satellite striking their home and killing everyone inside, they genuinely might believe you and move out of the state. However, if you attempted to convince them that the Chargers will have a good defense that forces bad teams to bench their starting quarterbacks, they would instead place you as a Brandon Staley-employed spy whose sole purpose is to conjure up blind faith for the future of the organization. That, truly, is the greatest dichotomy between both Chargers teams. This matchup would have been the most obvious trap game for the Chargers of old. Playcalling would become uninspired, mental mistakes would be aplenty, and players would play at half speed; all culminating in either an embarrassingly close game or a straight-up loss. Instead, the Chargers walked away with a dominant performance and a flock of players deserving of game balls. Elijah Molden grabbed an INT in place of an injured Alohi Gilman, Daiyan Henley and Denzel Perryman combined for 17 tackles, Dobby the elf was free to dart for 131 yards + a TD on 17 carries, and Quentin Johnston did his best impression of a WR who isn’t a draft bust by hauling in two TD’s. They now travel to Pittsburgh for their first real test of the year against a tough Steelers squad. | |
| 13. | Steelers | +1 | 2-0-0 | 9 undefeated teams remain, and that’s surprising unless you somehow believed in the Chargers, the Steelers, and the Vikings. Even the Chiefs had a bit of a scare. With those 3 aforementioned teams, that is also their order in points allowed. A few teams have been able to light it up this year, such as the Saints and Cardinals. Speaking of the Saints, they are 4th in points allowed. So if the Saints are really top-tier, does the Steelers offense have to go from being competent to more dynamic to be regarded as a top team? This is where Russell Wilson enters the chat. Justin Fields’ past liability has been decision-making, however he has played relatively mistake-free football through two games. Wilson is also pretty impressive in his TD/INT ratio. Could he ignite the offense? This then brings up the question, which is “what kind of Steelers team is this?” Perhaps the Falcons were counted out too soon, because against the vaunted Eagles, they looked more than competent - they looked commanding. Perhaps the Steelers de… |
