Seems to be a hot topic lately calling for Mark Stoops to be fired over his performance last week and at the end of the Georgia game. That is a terrible idea, here’s why.

• Kentucky is now firmly a “middle-pack” SEC program. We hit 6-8 wins regularly. We make bowl appearances almost yearly. We beat Louisville more often than not. I think a lot of fans are forgetting where this program was before Stoops took over. We were neck and neck with Vandy in the race to the bottom of the standings.

•The foundation of Kentucky Football is simply not build to be a “powerhouse” program. We have a very sparse recruiting ground. Any good home-grown talent is likely playing for a high school around Louisville with ties to their program. Our boosters are here to support the basketball team, so any donations have to be fought for over basketball. Before Stoops, we had the worst facilities in the league. Kentucky is a football 2nd school.

• Stoops is fully settled and integrated into the program and community. He has good relationships with the donors. He has a program that has continually built upon itself for over a decade. He is not and will never be the best coach, but Stoops brings in the donations and has developed a culture/ expectations- both of which will not carry over in a coaching change.

• A new coach is never a guarantee of higher success. In fact, more often than not it will backfire and set the program back years from where it was. Look at Florida, Texas A&M, etc. Eight, Nine, coaches in the past 20 years, and what do they have to show for it?

IF (and this is a big if) we are able to actually hire a coach to take us to the next level, we will only get flashes of greatness at best before he is poached by another school. There is no way a program like Kentucky can retain a great or elite coach while being surrounded by Florida, Auburn, Texas A&M, and possibly LSU who are all dying to make a new hire who will take them to the next level.

If you do not remember the state of Kentucky football before Stoops, please do some research before calling for Stoops to be fired. We are not and will never be a powerhouse program. Stoops is a great fit for us and our best chance at maintaining the success we’ve had relative to where we were. Kentucky football is interesting now, fun to follow. Please don’t ruin this by demanding more than the program is capable of.
