What happens when schools that are used to winning…are no longer winning? Everyone can’t be a winner, it’s a zero sum game and for every winner there is a loser.
If USC, Texas, and OU struggle in their new conferences - the decision to move is going to look incredibly short sighted. Who cares if the admin is making more money and you get a 5th practice field, if you’re losing to Maryland in a road trip on the other side of the country?
What happens when your 7-5 program is slugging it out with Minnesota in front of 30k apathetic fans that don’t care? (Par for the course for UCLA, to be fair)
What happens when you’ve been in the SEC for 5 years and not even come close to winning the conference?
Even with an expanded playoff, there are going to be less conference championships and less meaningful bowl games.
Does this degrade the fan enthusiasm for the sport, and ironically lead to less money long term?
