With the Pac-2/6/12 becoming (for now) the all-“State” conference, I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at all the FBS State schools, so here’s the data.

There are 31 current FBS programs that fit the XXX State pattern (LSU, MTSU, BGSU, and Sam Houston being a sort of anomalies here, but I included them anyway*).

  • 13 (including WSU and OSU) are “Power” schools.
  • 18 are “Group” schools.
  • All 13 of the Power schools are named after the actual state they are in (Washington State is in Washington state for example). Only 6 of the Group schools are named after the actual State.
  • 8 of the Group schools are named after the city they are in (Boise, Fresno, Jacksonville, Kennesaw, Kent, San Diego, San Jose, Bowling Green)
  • Appalachian State and Middle Tennessee State are named after the region they are in.
  • Ball State and Sam Houston State are named after people. Ball State is named after the Ball brothers who founded the Ball Corporation, which yes makes Ball Jars among other things, and Sam Houston State is named after some guy named Sam Houston I assume? Just kidding he’s the name sake of the city of Houston, the governor of Teneesee, President of Texas, Governor of Texas AND later Senator for Texas. Talk about a busy guy.

Here’s a List of all 31:

Team Name
Appalachian State
Arizona State
Arkansas State
Ball State
Boise State
Bowling Green State (BGSU)
Colorado State
Florida State
Fresno State
Georgia State
Iowa State
Jacksonville State
Kansas State
Kennesaw State

Sam Houston State (Sam Houston)
San Diego State
San Jose State
Texas State
Utah State
Washington State

EDIT: *Apologies to BGSU (Bowling Green State), MTSU (Middle Tennessee State), and Sam Houston (Sam Houston State) for missing your schools. To be fair, like LSU you don’t exactly make it easy with how you abbreviate your names, but you still deserve to be included. Numbers updated accordingly. Thanks to u/SlyClydesdale for pointing out my error.
