There’s a chance I missed some (so if anybody can double-check me, please have at it), but it appears to have happened 3 times:

  • Michigan State Michigan State from 1900-1905 had their wins go from 1, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9
  • North Carolina North Carolina from 1968-1972 had their wins go from 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, 11
  • Oregon Oregon from 1997-2001 had their wins go from 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11

It’s obviously quite difficult to get more than this, as you have to practically start in the dregs of 0-3 win seasons and eventually make it up to the likes of 9-12 win seasons. But if we’re covering ~10,000 team-seasons, I kind of would’ve guessed it had happened at least once.

(EDIT: To clarify, to have 5 improving seasons the time windows I’m looking at are 6 years because the first one is just the starting point and isn’t an improvement on the previous season. A couple of you have already pointed out other teams who have strung together 4 consecutive improvements but then counted the first year as an additional one thinking it makes 5. Hopefully this makes sense and eases any confusion as to why I didn’t include your team if they had done, by my counting, 4 consecutive such improving seasons.)
