Review didn’t make me laugh as consistently as Nathan For You; I think Nathan For You’s quasi-reality TV aspect with seemingly ordinary people made it funnier, but Review had the same perfect comedy beats and was a more cohesive scripted narrative. I’ve never laughed harder than “Cult, Perfect Body”, the “Space” episode with Fred Willard, the Little Person segment, or the Helen Keller episode. I know people here love “Pancakes, Divorce, Pancakes, " which is also amazing.
The finale almost got me. AJ smiling at the camera and encouraging Forrest to leave the show behind. I was smiling myself and got the feels. I was almost ready to think holy shit, it’s going to end on a happy note. A brilliant dark series that ends up actually being happy… I was honestly taken in. Then, when Andy Daly says, “Just gotta speak to producer Grant…” and Grant in the wheelchair appears out of the darkness… it is over. Granted I was stoned AF but I just fucking lost it. It is the darkest, bleakest ending to a comedy show since Veep but I was laughing so hard I couldn’t help it.
“AJ…I would like to VETO THIS REVIEW!!!”
