Welcome to the 2024 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 1! Sound the alarm, THE OFFSEASON IS OVER AND COLLEGE FOOTBALL IS BACK! I am so excited to go over this brand new and exciting conference - especially some of our new and improved uniforms! (WVU, Iowa State, TCU, Colorado, Baylor, and Texas Tech all have refreshed looks, with just about every team doing some minor updates) In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog every Big 12 team’s uniform combination week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s threads. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the game/rivalry and/or fun facts. This week our teams start a beautifully long season, dueling against some exciting teams. And WOW were there some terrific games. Let’s see how they fared, what they wore, and discuss how they looked as well! Thank goodness it is college football season once again!
I’m u/matte_purple, let’s 3,2,1 go!
University of Kansas Jayhawks vs Lindenwood University Lions (KU Wins, 48-3)
KU: White/Light Blue/White (Link: )
Lindenwood: Black/Black/Black (Link: )
The Jayhawks kick-started their year with a big win against a brand-spanking new member of the Ohio Valley Conference and relative neighborhood team - St. Louis’ Lindenwood Lions! While the Jayhawks may have started slow - a fumble & INT on back-to-back drives - an awesome pick six & a 58 yd mortar pass helped KU gain momentum in Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City. After the break, it was powder blue until the final whistle. KU looks to continue their dominance against Illinois in Champaign.
KU recently refreshed their look last July (2023) to wide acclaim. Their look has that newfangled retro-modern feel, which is certainly the style these days! It’s perfect for a team that has some high expectations this year and is trying to distance themselves from their sub-par football history. But in a pleasantly surprising turn of events, KU broke out a variation of their “Powder Blue” alternates introduced in 2022. Reminiscent of what the “Kansas Comet,” running back Gale Sayers, wore at KU from 1962-64, they were paired with dark blue - more standard - pants in 2022. Here, I think the white sandwiching the blue further elevates the look and allows the darker blue “Angry Jayhawk” logo from the 1940s on the helmet/pauldrons to pop, with the Bowtie logo on the helmet (used in 1929) giving a fun design element as well. Apart from the red number outline being just a liiitle bit bolder, I would say these are likely my favorite KU alternate. Starting the year out right!
Lindenwood University in St. Louis officially accepted an invitation to join the OVC in the fall of 2022, and that transition to FCS was accompanied by new uniforms. Out with the old school “UCLA stripes” and “Lindenwood” on the pant leg, in with a fairly plain jersey (in gray, black, and white options) and classic leg stripes to complement the prominent stripe on the helmet. Speaking of helmets, I like everything EXCEPT the logo. I feel like Lions, somehow, are a fairly underrepresented logo in college sports. In fact, I think there’s only 7-8 D-1 schools - both FCS and FBS - who use the mascot. But LU either uses a very odd looking custom logo, a “LU” monogram, or a Detroit Lions silhouette. Here, obviously it’s the snarling Lion logo on the helmet and shoulders. Everything else about the suits, including their relatively plain ArmourFuse template, is alright with me, especially the coloration and striping. But the logo was a bit of a miss. Still, I loved how this was technically a color on color matchup, with Lindenwood’s blackout and pops of gold clashing deliciously against KU’s airy blue scheme with dashes of red and darker blue. A gold facemask would have sealed the deal!
University of Central Florida Knights vs University of New Hampshire Wildcats (UCF Wins, 57-3)
UCF: Black/Black/Black (Link: )
UNH: White/White/Blue (Link: )
The Knights are expected to be somewhat of a Big 12 dark horse this season. They look to redeem some tough losses from last year, notably that wild Baylor game, OU bummer, and narrow Tech loss. They gained some momentum with this game and the unsurprisingly struck hard against the UNH Wildcats. RJ Harvey had himself a DAY, rushing the ball for 142 yds on 11 carries and 2 TDs. Looks like - yet again - UCF will be a tough team to beat moving forward. Charge on!
I hadn’t ever seen UNH play, doing some research, they look like an excellent school with a lot of neat history! Anyways, UNH has a great explanation for choosing the Wildcats (although they considered Bulls, Eagles, and Unicorns): The wildcat is small and aggressive – like New Hampshire. Hell yeah. Their current logo is a little goofy, but their 1993-2000 logos is great, and I surprisingly really like the interlocked NH logo they opted for here. The Wildcats’ uniforms are pretty barebones, the only distinguishing feature being the blue collar and “New Hampshire” wordmark. But, at the very least they are a good contrast to UCF’s all blacks. 6/10 uniform.
UCF has opened with a mostly black look each time I’ve covered them, going from a white helmet (2022) to a gold one in 2023. I was fully anticipating a continuation of the cycle, but UCF threw a curveball of AWESOME proportions and introduced a brand new look. These aren’t quite “blackout” uniforms, but feature black helmets with white facemasks (a brand new feature which I can’t get enough of) and a white Script Knights logo on both sides paired with black jerseys/pants - complete with shadow-gray pegasus accents and gold stars/number outlines. There’s something nice about the gold and white. But it’s undeniably bad-ass to see these, a knight in blackened steel astride his twilight colored destrier, sword in hand. I mentioned in my 2023 UCF Uniform Ranker that Script Knights and the Knight-Head Logos were my favorite logos. These helmets rocket their way to the top of my list! The Knights coming in HOT for Week 1!
University of Colorado Buffaloes vs North Dakota State University Bison (CU Wins, 31-26)
CU: Black/Black/Black (Link: )
NDSU: Yellow/White/Yellow (Link: )
Fans in the Centennial State (and I’m sure ones who just root for Deion) breathed a sigh of relief when the buzzer went off in this nail-biter game. I won’t spend more time talking about this match because I know it’s going to be a popular topic around this subreddit. Great work to NDSU, who always guns for the top! As for Colorado, a quick turnaround to compete away against a motivated Nebraska awaits!
Colorado’s new uniforms look intriguing! While I still think I need to stew on them a little bit, my interest is piqued by three things: 1.) Deion waited until game time for a reveal, just like the old days! I think this was a great decision, and generated more hype for an already hyped up game. 2.) The Flatirons are FINALLY on something for the Buffs! Many-a-Buff fan, especially the older ones I hang around, have lamented the lack of Flatirons representation in modern logos and uniforms. They look good! I’m not sure how I feel about their geometric nature, but I can tell you I DO NOT LIKE THEM ON THE PANT LEG. Why would you turn the mountain range on its side? That irks the hell out of me. Standard stripeless pants would hae worked infinitely better here. 3.) The gold is present and accounted for. Hopefully the picture does it justice, because the gold is shining brighter than any other team I’ve seen. I think it might be overbearing when you factor in a gold helmet and pants, but who even knows if the Buffaloes have those now? It’s a waiting game to see! As for this set,I’m content to give it an A for spectacle, and a B+ for design. Still lots of questions.
North Dakota State does the green-yellow combo right. And it’s all due to shading. Their yellow is a bolder shade than their original 1999-2011 color, and their green has always been a deep, rich, almost forest-green that really lends itself to the scheme. Plenty of fun and different variations, a great and recognizable logo, always paired with a different colored facemask, and a unique but not out-there font choice, I love these. The striping adds much needed structure, and I especially love the wheat stripe used on the main green helmet. For this particular suit, I’m never a huge yellow combo fan, but these work well for me. There’s enough green throughout the whole look to tie each piece in, and the only thing’s I’d nitpick are the notably different helmet, pant, and shoulder stripe. If those could be shored up I’d feel pretty good about the Bison here.
University of Utah Utes vs Southern Utah University Thunderbirds (Utah Wins, 49-0)
UTAH: White/Red/White (Link: )
SUU: Black/White/Black (Link: )
QB Can Rising was back in action for the first time in 606 days, and it was something to celebrate for the team. 64 yd TD pass, then a 29 yd, then 18 yd, then a 79 yd, capping it off with an 11 yd TD pass. The longe range shots accompanied a lack of preparedness from the Thunderbirds, leading to a very convincing victory and shu…
