26f living with a couple of sameish age, going on three years now. The couple, and more often specifically the man, just don’t lock the front door? The type of lock and handle we have means there’s only a deadbolt, and because of the humidity the lock is difficult to turn. Not impossible, but very very hard. And rather than using the back door, which also has the same problem but has a lock on the handle, they continue to use the front door. And just leave it unlocked.
I work third shift. Even if I didn’t, I think not securing the premises would still be an obvious problem. And this is a seasonal issue–every summer and winter I have sat down and talked to them about how I don’t like the door not being locked. How unsafe I feel waking up alone and realizing the front fucking door has been unlocked for god knows how long.
I hate it here. This time they don’t seem to care, I can go behind them and lock the door all I want but there will always be a moment I’m asleep, or in the shower, or just not paying attention. I’m working on my credit score so I can hopefully get a house of my own, but my god. I can’t sleep. We don’t live in a bad area, but crime happens everywhere. To anyone. I feel like I’m losing my mind, or they’re living in some alternate reality where horrible things and sleazy people just. Don’t exist.
I just needed to vent. And ask for advice, if anyone has any to share. I’ve gotten myself an addalock for my bedroom door, and a coworker has mentioned keeping foaming wasp/hornet spray at my bedside. Weathering this behavior is all I think I can do since appealing to empathy and common sense isn’t working.
