KCFHS (Kevin Can F*** Himself) is a series that’s actually a terrific idea. Ever since I saw Last Action Hero & later Toy Story, the question for me was, “I wonder what the sitcom characters do when the scene isn’t on them” and apparently I wasn’t the only one. Maybe it was my own expectations on how I thought the series was going to go but I was sadly disappointed in how it was ultimately executed. Allison, a typical sitcom wife is feeling the emptiness of her life & wants out. So you would think she’d try a bunch of scenarios but immediately it goes to her trying to kill Kevin. This doesn’t exactly make her a good character. I wanted to like her as a character because the Kevin character is a characture of 80’s sitcom husbands but really she’s not much better. Blaming everyone else for problems she causes & ultimately making othet people’s life worse albeit momentarily more interesting. Patty, the chain smoking sister to Kevin’s best friend Neil is a depressing character, who is more tolerable in the sitcom setting. Neil is another who is eventually gets some “real world” stories and you kind of just don’t care. I started to feel bad for him until I just rolled my eyes. Kevin’s father is probably the only one who is remotely innocent or likable and he’s a dope too. Kevin himself, like I said is a characture and I do wish we got more then that last scene to see the world through his eyes or at the very least the “real world” version of Kevin. Though it was an effective way they do that. It’s pretty obvious by the end that the show was prematurely cancelled and they had to hurry it up and end it with a proper finale as a few storylines are left hanging (not like a cliffhanger, just as stories they couldn’t wrap up like they wanted too).
Those stories are
- Tammy’s investigation just ends, a character shown to be obssessive about her job just decides to give up the investigation for the woman she cares about, THAN they break up. Part of this investigation deals with someone’s death, Party’s drug dealing at the start of the show.
- Neil & Diane’s story is thrown out as suddenly Diane wants to stay with the husband she’s been wanting to leave and who she was going to leave.
- Neil’s whole character arc is left hanging, he loses his best friend, the girl he realizes he cares for and than kicked out by his sister.
- Kevin dying in a fire of his own doing just as his “dead” wife resurfaces would’ve been a case to be investigated.
- Sam’s story and the relationship that was being set up between him and Allison just ends and we are led to think Allison and Patty will just be like Spinster sisters (maybe the Golden Girls)
Overall the acting was good and I did like the idea but it fell apart kind of quick. I’m just glad it was only 16 episodes and actually had an end because I would’ve been upset if I went through all of that just to not have closure.
I also like the modern day aesthetic of the All in the Family living room set.
At the time of this review it’s on AMC Plus and Netflix US
