Let’s start with the victors of the day

  • Montana State, an FCS powerhouse, was a 14 point favorite over New Mexico. Despite this, they spent most of the day getting pummeled and falling into a 31-14 deficit before clawing their way back into a 35-31 victory. This one probably is the least jarring of them all. A great FCS team is still gonna be at risk of losing to even bad FBS teams pretty much every time. The talent differentials and resources are generally on a different level.
  • SMU, now a P4 program that won the AAC last year and went 11-3, was a 28 point favorite over Mountain West Nevada that went 2-10 last year. They spent most of their evening in excruciating pain as Nevada led most of the game before SMU finally pulled ahead.
  • Hawaii, a nearly 40 point favorite, was tied up 14-14 in the third quarter with Delaware state. This one ended up being the least climactic one as they did manage to rattle 21 straight points to win 35-14.

Now let’s circle back to where it all began.

  • Florida State was a 10 point favorite over Georgia Tech. Outside of their opening drive, a couple of good 4th down conversions, and their kicker. Florida State’s offense really didn’t look hot. But the defense was the main problem for FSU in this one. GT looked in control for most of this game and had no problem running the football. Like to a point where I saw the RB run headlong into a group 4-5 of FSU defenders and still get 5 yards. Most of GTs problems on offense were caused by GT with a couple of glaring errors by GT too such as nearly losing a couple of fumbles. Including one that set them back big time on their closing drive. Despite that, they won 27-24.

Honorable mention:

  • Florida A&M was ranked 25th at their level and faced a challenge from Norfolk State. Ultimately hanging on to win 24-23. Presumably they were favored in this game.

It’s wild that every favored team team faced an upset prospect right out of the gate. It’s even wilder (to me) that the highest ranked and likely overall most well coached team was the one that lost out of them. But this is why we love CFB at the end of the day!

That said, if you’re superstitious or think this is a sign from the football gods. Maybe it’d be a good idea to take the under in most games this year and to prepare for some chaos.
