Just binged this entire show in less than a week. What an amazing ride! I saw some great reviews for it but on the surface it kinda seemed like Barry-lite.
It’s really anything but though, and is completely its own unique beast. It’s like a crazy combination of dark comedy/character drama/crime thriller/action movie and it does all of it so well. It’s an episodic narrative but with character and thematic arcs that develop and pay off throughout the entire show.
In any given episode, it can veer from dark to funny to tragic to adrenaline-inducing. The dialogue and writing is just fantastic and it’s a treat to just listen to the characters talk and shoot the shit. Ray is a fascinating protagonist and imo really deserves to be in the pantheon of the great antiheroes with the likes of tony soprano, Don Draper etc. His relationships with the various characters really drive the story, and it’s brilliantly played by Scott Ryan. I can’t believe the guy hasn’t done anything else because he’s damn good here. Supporting cast is great as well, especially Damon Herriman, who’s always a blast to watch.
My only gripe with the show - and this is actually kind of a positive when you think about it - is that it feels way too short. I honestly would’ve loved at least one more season but I also respect when a creator knows when it’s time to wrap up a story.
And that final scene? Just brilliant. RUN.
